So I have been beaten by the cutlass bearing on Dad's 63... I guess more correctly by the shaft coupler. Spent two evening trying to remove it and none of the methods here would work.
On the 63, the engine/transmission rear mount is so close to the transmission coupler, that it is impossible to use threaded rods or bolts as you can not get a backing nut between the coupler and the engine mount. So tried to use a bolt (3/8-24) but you can only get about a 3/8" of travel, again due to the closeness of the coupler to the engine mount (1/4" through the coupler and about an 1/8" tell you hit the engine mount on the back side). Additionally, I would need about 10 different sizes of bolts to step down each time and hardware stores don't carry a lot of different 3/8-24 hardware and I don't have the tools to cut them down. VERY FRUSTRATING!
Anyway, before I start calling marina's to see if any have the Strut Pro Cutlass Bearing Removal Tool, I thought I would ask here. No 63 at GL this year, not sure who will be more bummed, me or Dad...

Steve, I am of no help, but I am feeling your fathers and your pain. If someone had the tool could youmake the repair at GL? Seems like something Pete could help with. Would make a great seminar project.

Steve,
I hate to say this but there are times when the engine has to be pulled to get the prop shaft out by pulling it forward. this is true with close coupled aft engines like Billy's Dart. Alan will have the same issue with his Hurricane/hemi. In your case, that Dearbo and it's rear mount design complicates the problem.
What are you doing? I gather from the title that you are changing the cutlass?

Pete,
Oh boy not the news I wanted to hear... Yes, very bad vibration at low speeds from something behind the log in the drive train. Clearly it is the cutlass bearing as it has 1/16" movement all the way around the shaft.
I really don't want to go down the route of pulling the strut either. The crazy thing is when I aligned the strut in the center, the alignment was spot on. Not bad for a 45+ year boat... So the Strut Pro seems to be the best answer, as pulling the engine route is not something I can pursue until I find a place to store it to work on it.
