Hey all!!!
I have seen quite a few talks about Damper Plates and was wondering what they do, how hard they are to change, and why they even go bad...
A friend here on CCFAN and also someone I know personally on our ski team (phil, 70CC) and us have the same kind of issue going on.
In idle we hear the tap tap click click knock knock coming from below the floor in the back. I've read enough to understand that most likely it is the damper plate. What do we need to do? Is it boat threatening? It is after-all, pretty annoying. Thanks fellas

Mike,
The dampner is really a flex coupling to the trans. They have springs between the main plate that attaches to the flywheel and then to the output splined hub to the trans input. The springs fatigue and do break. Back in the days when solid couplings were used, the modern hydraulic marine trans's were being torn up by the torsional vibratins from the engines.

You know, the boat started doing this when we put the 1442 on.
Would that make a diff?

With the increased surface area did the 1442 drop your in gear idle rpm?

It might have...
Phil has a 97 ski with the same motor same tranny we have in our 2000 sport. Both of us had our problems start when we put the 1442 on.
When we move the throttle JUST off idle the tick knock goes away.

i had a 1981 ski with a bad(really bad) dampner plate and i went thru several transmission front pumps before i found the problem. i never noticed any stange noise from it being bad. i personally made some extreme noise when i would put in a new front pump, go to the lake to ski, and after 5 mins in the water the boat would not go forward . finally noticed the bad plate, replaced it and the front pump..again., and as far as i know the boat is still in operation.

Bill,
It's great you figured out the problem bu It's also sad that you had the tran's problem due to a 100$ plate!!! At least you got it figured out!
