background: I'm getting power from battery, so its not that. Will start most of the time, but sometimes it doesn't even click over - the lights all go on and the guages function, but no click.
I'm wondering if its somekind of knock sensor?

Sounds like the neutral safety switch to me. Try moving your control back and forth in neutral while you turn your key. If it starts, then you probably just need to adjust your shift cable so that the transmission lever is centered in neutral when your control is in neutral.
