I seem to have the opposite overheating problem from everybody else here. My 89.5 Sport Nautique only gets hot at idle. Up to about 185 depending on the mood it is in. Only a few hundred RPM above idle and it immediately returns to 160 which is the temp. it has run at for years until recently. The water circ, impeller, and stat are all new. As far as I know an impeller has never been shred and I have owned it since 96'. Help please it is driving me crazy. Eventhough 185 is not that hot. Something ain't right.

Try replacing the sending unit. You might be getting a false reading. A friend of mine did the same as yours, and the raw pump had about a third of its implellor blades missing.

It's probably the raw water pump.

OK, I have to ask.... is the belt tight on the raw water pump? Otherwise, check the raw water pump housing for grooves inside.

Thanks for the responses. The impeller is in perfect condition. The belt is tight, of course. Could the whole pump have a problem? How likely is it that the problem is electrical as described by many people on this forum?

well the sending unit is $9, give it a try.
maybe check the lines and circulating pump for blockage. do you have a strainer?

Sounds like you might have a slight leak on the intake side of the raw water pump. At idle, it will suck air. A little rpm and the pump will draw enough water to overcome the leak. Check the trans cooler and hoses. Its prob not the sender because it doesnt care what rpm the engine is at. It sounds like its working fine since it goes down when you go above idle.

Check your strainer also. Mine had the seal pinched in one area and did the same thing. Took it off straightend out the o-ring replaced and it cools fine at idle.
