I am looking to replace the cutlass bearing, I apparently have a custom strut that a PO modified does anybody know if this is common or is there a replacement strut that I could get to replace it. Also I noticed a small crack forming at the base of my rudder, are these fixable or can I even get a new one. 79 BFN by the way, 454.

Chris,
Fill us in on this custom strut some more. Do you know why the PO modified it? How about a picture.

Take the rudder to a prop shop and see what they think. They are the experts on welding brass.

The Strut has had extensions welded on each side which make it longer front to back and it looks like the tube where the cutlass is has also been extended, no idea why it was done. I bought it not running, for cheap, so I didnt give it a real close look but now more and more problems keep arising.

That doesnt sound good.

FYI, when searching, the '79 BFN used a "6A" strut. It actually is the same strut used on the Skiers, Mustang 16 and Ski Tiques. Presumably other v-hulls as well, probably the Southwind- but Im not sure which in particular. If ordering a new strut from a CC dealer, then you will want a "6A6" strut, as the 6A is no longer available. The 6A6 has a longer (6" vs. 5") body, with the extra inch being towards the rear.

The rudder (11A, 1-1/8" shaft) and corresponding port are pretty common. CC used the same one on all Ski Nautiques from 1970 forward, and it was used on the v-hulls like the BFN (obviously), Southwind, etc. It got a tuneable piece in '99, but the same rudder is still being used on the current CC direct drives. The smaller rudder on the 16' Skiers, Tiques and Mustangs will NOT work (it has a 1" shaft).

Good luck with your search.
