I am thinking of buying a used ski: HO Extreme Mach 1 (unknown vintage, buts looks fairly modern). Anyone know anything about this ski? I am an intermediate to advanced free skier...no courses, just for fun. The ski is 68" and I weight 205 and am 6'-6". I know the ski is a bit short for my build, but I am used to skiing on short skis. Any advise.

DavidF; I skied a Mach1 for years and enjoyed it quite a bit. Bought it cheap from my brother who hated it. He is your size, I'm 5-10 about 175 so I think that ski might be a little small for you. Demo it before you buy. Don't pay much, that is an old ski and there is lots out there that you might enjoy more. I do like the HO stuff tho. Also, I enjoy your posts, you seem very well informed. That is the great thing about this site, all the info sharing.....jbear

DavidF,
HO marketed that ski as it's recreational, traditionally shaped ski, just below competition abilities. More foregiving than a comp ski, but still able to cut aggressively, and run the buoys at longer line lenghts, and/or slower speeds.
They took it off the market for a while, but brought it back due to its popularity, and relatively low cost (about $300 bucks new with bindings).
They do make a 70" version which might be better suited for you height.

HO isn't that old. It was started around 1991. I bought my first HO in '92. When O'Brien was sold the owner started HO. Short for Henry O'Brien, I think.

Hi TimD,
HO Sports was actually founded in 1981. The
HO stands for Herb Obrien, who also started
Obrien waterskis in 1966, when he was still
a teenager. Herb did a little time in jail
in between companies.

David,
If you havn't already, you should check out Ski-it-again.com. They have a list of http://www.ski-it-again.com/php/skiitagain.php?topic=Search&category=Slalom - over 120 used slalom skies .
Without any demo experience (I ski a KD 7000), I would also look at the Connelly F3 and O'Brian Seige. It will be a little more difficult finding used skies longer than '67 but they are out there.
Good luck and let us know what you end up getting.
-Keith

Yes, I have visited ski-it-again and find most people are exceptionally proud of their skis on that site. I passed on the Mach 1.
Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks.

You can Call Carbonworx 1-866-ski-jump or 1.720.685.0455 and see if Boyd has a blem 68.5 outlaw (that is not to small of a ski for your size). I have skied on every ski in the built since my first HO Mach 1 (1982) and this new OUTLAW is by far the most incredible ski I have ever skied.

I was gonna say I thought I remembered HO from my teenage years (mid 80s) when I was part of a small ski club (I guess you could call us that) The joke I had always remembered was that HO stood for "Hollowed out" in reference to possible reasons for incarceration.

66 Altyll,
I read an interview with Herb O a while back.
He acknowleded the vacation behind bars, but I don't think they ever brought out what he actually went to jail for.
The rumors I've read all revolve around drugs, but vary from possession and use, to embezzlement of funds to facilitate a deal.
Anyway, a mistake made by a young man. He's been very successful in the 25 years since, is still a phenomenal skier, is credited with creating modern wakeboarding, and has led a pretty incredible life up in Washington.

BKH; Love your posts. You are very well informed about most anything to do with skiing. How do you remember all the dates and names so well? Keep 'em coming!....jbear

I was intrigued by the Herb O'Brien story....here is what I found....sounds like an episode of Miami Vice.
" H.O. Water sports, formerly known as O'Brien, makes skis, wakeboards, and accessories. But the owner Herb O'Brien had a drug problem and went to jail when he was caught smuggling drugs inside water-skis. He was ordered to give up rights to his name and multi million dollar business when he went to jail. But in true Trump style business, he came back, used his initials H.O. for the name, and built up his business to another multi million dollar business with new skis, wake boards, and apparel." -random quote from google search
So I guess HO does stand for 'hollowed out'!!!
Back on point...I picked up a Connelly F3 blem from Overton's. After tweaking the binding and fin positions it is really a great ski, and it only cost me about $300. I think it comes in a 68.

I've just got a mind for useless trivia. Still
remember everything from the fraternity pledge
book, the boy scout oath, etc. and that's been
over 25 years.
Now if I could just remember people's names, or where I left my car keys, I might be in business

Wiley's still has the HO CDX. This was a top of the line ski for HO for several years.
HO discontinued when it came out with the phantom truth and the monza. Ski was so popular that Wiley's had HO make a run for them to sell. I've never skied it, but I have lots of friends who do, and they really like it. They are selling for a lot less than the original sticker of 3 or 4 years ago.

I agree with BKH on the CDX. I know of at least 5 guys that use and love it. And like I said before I like the HO stuff. Has a nice aroma to it when you take it outa the box. Maybe thats why I don't know where my keys are half the time BKH....jbear

I have bought skis based on reputation and reccomendation only to be disappointed by the way it felt on the water. I wouldnt buy another ski w/o riding it at least twice. There are shops that will let you demo/rent and then discount what you paid in rental fees. I am skiing on the KD CR7 and like it a lot, the Goode was a close second.

DavidF,
Getting back into skiing a little after a few years on the wakeboard. Skied two different skis today.
Connely Concept, 68" This is my ski, hadn't used it in a couple of years because I got too fat. Lost a few lbs so I broke it out.
Forgotten how much I enjoy this ski. Not lightning fast like the new carbon skis, but edges very well, very stable, and doesn't have a mind of its own.
KD Evolution 70". This is my buddy's ski. He's in his 60s now but still skis very well. Mike Syderhoud picked this out for him. It is about an inch or so wider than a standard slalom, but is very fast. You need to stay on edge. If you get lazy it will take off on its own. Really handled well. Liked the bindings as well. I believe KD renamed the ski this year.

own a 1980 ho mach 1 i'm 6 foot 200 pounds
this ski cuts hard and moves quickly thru the wake it is not forgiving it will dump you in a heartbeat i liked my brother's stinger slalom ski which was alot smoother and not so drastic when you make a minor mistake

The CDX-1 is a fantastic ski for anyone that is intermediate and above. It is very smooth and forgiving, like the Mach-1 was for years, but allows you take generate more speed coming out of your turns. It is a ski that can take you to the next level, yet forgiving enough that you don't have to be perfect. The CDX from @1999 and newer are all very good, and are readily available on ski-it-again, or new from Wiley's. Give it a chance, I know that you will like it. Also the Animal high wraps are second to none!
I ski on a phantom, which is pretty aggresive, but I have skied the CDX numerous times, and many of my ski partners ride the CDX also, I enjoy the CDX as much as my own ski, and find it even better than the new HO's that are out this year.
