my tran chatters a bit when first started up then goes away after a bit any ideas. 87 sn

What's your idle RPM? It's been cover several times - too low an idle RPM will cause the planetary gear set (reverse) to chatter.

if the teeth are opened up also on the reverse clutchs they will chatter, what year, how many hours?

got an 87 sn with 650 hrs that explains alot. i had a know it all tinker with my idle screw and thats when my problem started. i will adjust it whats the best rpm idle . im around 500 or less

600 to 650 IN GEAR.
BTW, you also may waht to take a look at previouse posts on idle adjustment using both the base idle screw as well as the air bleed screws. All you need to do is use the search feature. I just did and PLENTY comes up. There's lots of great info already on site.

thax guys im at 650 in gear now and 850 to 900 in neutral. it shifts harder into rev but fwd is smooth. also had my prop repaired. took some cup out and boosted my rpms to 4300 plus the hole shot is quite a bit faster :) kinda throws ya back! well running great now.only put 25 hrs since i bought her jul14. now its about time to put her up.... after a leaf run=°]

Andrew,
The RPM's between neutral and in gear should not be more than about 100 RPM. Have you checked your alignment especially the strut to the log/packing gland?

that is a big drop, but maybe the cup in the prop is pulling it down, like Pete said, check the alignment
