Me & HW just picked up this Boat from "Tate" down in 10RC, Thank You Tate!!

And no we did not pick it up with Snoop Dogs Ghetto Caddy, Thanks Johnny for driving & providing the tow vehicle!

1980 Martinique: Definitely needs a good rub & scrub but overall a really great boat with so much potential.

This AM, hooked up for the short ride to the launch:

On the water:

A little sluggish with it's current prop and only getting about 3900rpm

Gotta love it's BFN hull, look at that table!!

Hey BJ,

$300 in Fuel & $200 in Tires, LOL, HW added new tail lights & wires before hitting the road, one of the tires changed from round to oval on the way so replaced both, spare should be fine as a spare.

Everything else was good, trailer is in really good shape, newer axle, bearings and paint job.

Obviously you gotta scrap that 13x14 and put a 540 on it!

Also check to make sure your secondaries are opening... it sure didnt sound like it in the video. If youre running 3900 (probably 40+ with that prop) purely on the primaries, youre doing pretty good.

No Question Timmy and HW have a vast amount of experience with sloppy secondaries however, Pete, did not know that was another area of your expertise .

Thanks Tom, it really has a great Retro Look, gotta love the 80's for more then just the music!

Good looking boat gentlemen. The caddy pulling it is classic.Must be a northern thing. NEVER see that down here in the south. They'd run you outta town or run over it with their truck.

Congrats guys!

Rebuild the carb... secondary vacuum/actuation circuit is most likely plugged. Check to make sure you can move the shaft/butterflies by hand first. If they do, then keep an eye on them while driving to see if they come in... if not, pull them in by hand (push up on the diaphragm lever). Thats a 2-person job, obviously.

Throw a smaller prop on there too, if youve got one sitting around!

Put a Federal 13x13 on and it seems to run smooth, plenty of RPM though the tach cannot be accurate, climbed to 5k @ 35mph (GPS).

Johnny and I did a 24hr there-and-back trip to get the boat. Left at midnight Friday and returned at midnight Saturday. Thanks again Tate!

Hurried up past this accident waiting to happen.

Tire stop after we noticed the axle vibrating. Put Load D tires on, pulled great after that. Twisted belt?

Looked like a chipmunk running around the tire shop.

Would not leave me alone until we found his buddy hiding up under this truck.

New to me for a boat trailer. quinny put a snowmobile ski dolly under the sandpad, works great now!

Unfortunately the haul home didn't completely blow all the leaves out.

Two rotocast driver seats. Not original, but much more comfortable and functional than the original late 70s/early 80s seats. They'll definitely stay. Tate said Woody made the pylon for him.

Nice re-paint job on the stripes.

Notice the one and only Hydrodyne Barefoot Dyne in the background.

She floats and runs!

GLASS calm water last night.

Let's shred it up.

quinner's midlife crisis, 2 hatchbacks. I whould have gone with one red Corvette instead..

tear down is going along, time to get one of those diamond cup grinding wheels though and get down to the hull.

Mars, I'm going to need your help putting this back together.

Muriatic acid rolled on and scrubbed. Still have some to finish or might just leave it like reidp does.

Spanned the attic opening with a few 4x4s.

Carpet removal was a MAJOR pita.

Interesting transom I haven't seen any boats with the center hump. Blocks added in here are for the inside platform brackets.

Up comes floor. Circular saw made a dusty mess. I much preferred the jigsaw. A little slower but MUCH cleaner.

All plywood under the floor has been complete mush, easily vacuumed up.

Foam has been surprisingly dry, certainly wet in usual areas but not that bad.

Refreshing the dash will be easy. Wiring harness has plugs on both ends.

Best $6.44 spent so far on the saw blade.

Shaft checks out straight.

Hopefully Knucklehead will post some of the pics, we are nearing the end of the tear out phase. Up until we uncovered the stringers themselves most of what we had encountered was not that wet, dry enough where we (I) were wondering if the stringer job was even necessary yet.

Mystery no more, Pics to follow (HW)

A layer of the hull is going too

Continuing up the sides. I will score it and try to get it to stop, then glass a fresh layer wherever we lost some.

You can see the stringer was bedded on top of the grayish layer. The reddish layer is all underneath.

Pete, where is your keep it original passion.

They did not have CAD programs back in 1980. So the Chicago "Blues Bros" are keeping it original by doing it the old fashioned way pen on paper. Or in this redneck retro case, marker on cardboard.

Just noticed something very unusual about this Martinique. It has a Riviera style dash instead of the normal Martinique dash.   Which in my opinion is a huge plus. (I've always dis-liked the protruding bump in the center of the Martinique dash)

Posted By: quinner
Date Posted: February-19-2013 at 3:55pm
Doc, not sure what is what there, brochure shows as you describe however these photo's of an (presumably) all original 80' that was for sale a while back match what we have.

Tottally agree, our version looks much better.

How kool was the original interior in these, wow. Ours is way past that but the PO did add real teak where the teak stickers were on the dash and some other spots.

Not as much progress this w/e as last but getting close to completing the tear out....What a giant PITA this phase is.

Seems like in 1980 they didn't quite finalize the dash design. We're "lucky" to have the later one.
1982 model year

1983 model year

So half the hull is now missing one to two layers of the original layup.

A "multi tool" was used to score the glass prior to prying it up. Worked very well.

Evidence of hard work

Good progress... and yup, tear out and grinding sucks big time! Based on the color difference and the ease that the first layer of glass is coming up, it sure seems like your boat had an issue with the original layup. Maybe done in 2 stages, maybe a bad batch of resin, who knows. Getting down to that solid pinky color is definitely a good move.

CQ, you look like a natural with that shop vac. Must be all your hoovering experience.

-------------

Your dash is actually good looking as opposed to the other. I do dig that huge wrap around lift up rear seat though!

Those boats have such a classic hull and graphic.

-------------

Posted By: Hollywood
Date Posted: February-19-2013 at 6:43pm
Once we got down to the pink stuff he was lost.

Tim, you can't see it well in these pics but pretty much exactly under the floor level the glass is like a gray color, even up the sides under where the floor lip was. That peeled right off too with a crowbar. Haven't ground anything yet, just cut and peel.

-------------

Posted By: quinner
Date Posted: February-19-2013 at 7:22pm
Came up easy, are you friggin kidding me. A hammer and flat bar / crow bar has been the MVP right behind the shop vac, some areas did come up easier then others, the transitions at the bow and stern have been brutal. Dipchit spent 4 hrs Sat cutting down the craddle which I would wager a dollar may prove to have been unnecessary later, lol.

We should also take a pole, saying "I will be there early tomorrow (sat or sun)" what time would you mean, 7am, 8am, noon, midnight, etc.

I think I would be very wary of opening pictures or videos from CQ...the authorites might be just one step behind.....

But I sure am glad to see this thread back to life. About time we saw this boat and motor back on the water. When did this start...2011?
