I'm the 3rd owner of my 84 SN 2001. It has http://www.nautiqueparts.com/fuelfill85-96boats.aspx - this style of fuel filler. However, the cap really doesn't seem to go on/off right.
According to the NautiqueParts website, that pic is for 85 and newer and mine should have http://www.nautiqueparts.com/fuelfill-oldernautiqueswithtabbedcap.aspx - this style instead.
Did a PO replace the cap or did they make some of the '84s with standard filler without the tabbed cap or the top ridge?

my 83 had the one like the second picture. I am not sure about the 84 but I bet it was the same.

It looks like they were having fitment issues with the replacement caps, according to the description on the first one. I remember they used to sell the cap only, I was going to buy one as a spare.
I wonder if the PO lost the original cap and replaced it with one that didn't fit as well.
It looks like you could replace yours with a complete unit. You could probably go with either design, as long as you confirm the diameter of the neck is the same and the screw holes are in the same place.

The thing about replacing the cap is it still doesn't have that rigde or lip over the top 1/2 of the filler though.
I guess I'll go with the 2nd one (the older style). I do like the idea of not having to use the key.

And to clarify my first post... mine is the first style, cap AND filler (without the ridge).
Yet the NautiqueParts site leads me to believe that mine from the factory should have been the cap with the tabs and the filler with the ridge.

My '84 has the second (older) style - pretty sure it is original. Not sure if some 84's had the newer style. One plus to the first (newer) style is corrosion resistance. The chrome zinc original corrodes pretty easily, mine is a bit pitted. However, it's nice not to need a key and keep it original...
