Friend's boat has a weird idle, it revs up and down. Ocassionally dies but usually just keeps running with the idle like that. Runs fine at crusing speed. Sometimes the idle straightens out for a few second and then goes back to the reving up and down.

checked for vaccum leaks, pcv valve replaced, any more ideas? Carb related maybe?

rebuild the carb, or you haven't located the vaccum leak yet

It is probably carb related. I concur with 79. Rebuilding the carb will probably reveal the problem.

It does sound like a carb problem, but before you do the rebuild, do a tune-up on the engine and make sure to check the timing. When I bought my boat, the idle was inconsistent. I found the root cause was the timing being off by 10 degrees.

Also check the mechanical advance springs in your distributor.

If it's a holley a popped power valve will do just that. Fuel leaking through will affect the idle circuit and wreak havock with the forward float, causing the surge. Good luck

I dont think its the power valve, it takes off just fine everytime even pulling wakeboarders up, only problem is at idle. I'm thinking its carb rebuild time.

Check at the base of the carb. Mine was acting the same way and it had a vacuum leak between the carb & manifold.

When you accelerate your no longer on the idle circuit. Good luck with the rebuild.
