I read on a thread that someone found a nearly identical replacement fuel tank for a 60's Mustang in plastic. I have searched and can't find the thread again. Does anyone remember this or have any information. It looks like Tempo and Moeller merged sometime back and there is a Moeller tank that has the same dimensions as the original ( Product # 032719, Product Dimension: 47.00L x 10.25W x 10.19H) however the fill neck is in the center under what would be the sight gauge, or sending unit on my 69 & 70 Mustangs. I was going to throw the original in the garage attic and replace it with plastic. If I can't find one I will take the original one to have it cleaned and epoxy coated inside.

The successful route for many restorations is the tank cleaning/coating process. John, here's a pic of a Tempo tank I bought 3 years ago. It was the only one I could find at the time and may have been the last Tempo available. For some reason Moeller changed the fuel neck which is too bad as these old steel Tempo tanks rust and the Tempo was a decent replacement. If your tank is not too rusted, you should try to keep it, but I've got 3 in my yard right now and 2 are too rusted to salvage and I don't trust the 3rd one. The '74 Skier we picked up has a modern aluminum tank which looks like an exact replacement fit for the old Tempo and we hope to use it in another project we're working on. I got a couple quotes for custom aluminum tanks that were in the $300-$400 price range which was higher than my budget allowed. See if there's a shop that'll inspect and seal your old tank. I couldn't find a shop in my area that would do that because of liability.

John, I believe there was a link posted to a plastic option in my 70 Skier thread, it's been a few years tho. I stated researching them back at that time but never pulled the trigger on one in hopes that I could save mine. Other projects have kept me from moving any further forward but a local welder believes he can save it for me. Might be best to explore that option. ------------- |

Sounds like its off to Gas Tank Renu with the better of the two tanks which is in 'Sconsin right now.
Neither of them leak, but I will start with the one that has not been repaired. BTW, Gas Tank Renu does great work, at least the one near me does. The only trouble is that the acid dipping removes the paint and graphics from the outside. Has anyone ever cut open on of these tanks? I ask because I had a running problem this summer and suspect the pickup may have a crack in it.Im wondering if the pickup is attached to something in the tank or does it just hang from the top? Gary - Cutting a fuel tank is risky buisness. You can have it boiled to get the gas residue out, or fill it with an inert gas such as nitrogen to keep it from exploding when you work on it. If you do decide to do some inspection, you should cut an access panel on the top, and install some nut plates for re-attaching the panel cover. You'll need to seal the edges of the cover when you are done so you don't get un-intended leakage into the bildge. I had no intention of cutting mine Kris,if it needed it I would just take it in. We cut the tank in my 64 open to remove someone's poor attempt of installing a liner. It was peeling and plugging the pickup tube. I could not find a replacement at the time so we had no choice.
After it was opened, I cleaned all the old liner out, re-welded and used http://damonq.com/Red-Kote.html - Red-Kote to reline the tank. Been used for two summers with no problems. btw, the pickup tube in the 'Skier just screws into a pipe thread fitting in the top of the tank(no sender).
