I took my boat out for my first trip and it ran like a dream! No carb problems, transmission worked perfectly and temp was fine. Since the engine seems to be done it is time to look at the interior.
It has what I think is a real pretty blue color. I am attaching a picture. This is original. See the heated marks on the vinyl? Can this style/color be purchased still or is it too outdated? If it were your boat, would you restore it to original or would you rip it all out and make it look like the new boats?

Haven't seen the outside of the boat, so kind of shooting blind. It would be great to keep the boat original, but the blue was kind of trendy for the time, very 70s. I'm thinking that you might be able to do a white based upholstery. White or silver cloud is kind of timeless, usually looks good in any era. If done right I think it might look authentic and updated all in 1 fell swoop. BKH ------------- Livin' the Dream |

This is a picture of the outside. It needs to be redone as you would expect with a boat this age. Seeing how I couldnt get the registration numbers straight I cannot imagine sanding off the paint and applying vinyl. It is all in the blue theme

I bought a '72 that the PO had the interior changed to the new style with "swirl" inserts etc.
My boat looks kinda like Grandma in a mini skirt and boots. I like the old style better. Your boat looks great. Ok, since you asked... If I were reupholstering, there's no way I'd go with the old blue the melted in fake stitching. I saw this boat at a marina over the summer and it looked absolutely stunning. http://www.correctcraftfan.com/diaries/details.asp?ID=518 - 1980 Nautique Clean, classic, and it retained the original style seats, but it's far from the original if you look at the 1980 brochure. If you break down the cost of the job, it's labor, foam, and vinyl. The vinyl may only be 20% - 25% of the total, so why not go with a better look? Not necessarily a newer look, because I wouldn't want tribal graphics on it either. The 70's had a lot going for it, but there is a reason you can't buy a new refridgerator in avacodo green or harvest gold. |

I'd keep the classic look, but play with it...
You could do white interior with blue accents... Or if the outside is white with Blue do the interior blue with white accents... What ever you do - good luck! |

Hey John, I was the one who emailed you after I saw your boat at Norris. I just looked back and realized I didn't reply to your reply, but thanks for getting back to me. Your boat looks awesome, and I hope I can get mine looking that good.
To put the page in a hyperlink in a post, you click on the 4th button from the left above the message box (looks like a globe with a link). 2 boxes will pop up - in the first, you enter the text that you want to see as a label, in my post that was 1980 Nautique. The web address is what shows up in the address bar(or box) at the top of your web browser window. If you don't see it there, and you use Internet Explorer, click View and then toolbars at the top of the screen and make sure that "Address Bar" is checked. I went to your Diary entry on this site and copied the address (highlighted it in the address bar, right mouse click, selected "copy") from the address bar, then came to this thread and when I replied, pasted it in the second hyperlink box. Sorry if that's confusing, I sit in front of a PC all day at work.
Another trick - In your diary page, you can right click on your pic and select "properties". That will give you the address of the pic and if you select the "Add Image" button on the reply box (far right, has a pic of a tree on it, enter or copy and paste the address of the image...) you can put the pic right in your reply like so...

The previous owners redid the vinyl in my 74 mustang a few years ago. I really like the double stripes they put in it. Check it out.
It's not easy to see, because the seats are out of the boat right now, but I think the white vinyl with blue stripes looks great and matches the graphics on the hull. |

We completely had the vinyl redone on the 74 Mustang. We wanted it be be as close as original as can be. I couldnt find anyone to melt in the designs so we had them stitched. Stiching doubled the price but it really looks nice and keeps the "classic" look. Why disrupt or modify a great classic? | The stripes idea looks good and would be cheaper. with 3 kids I think I will look more at a cream color then a bright white. I was getting the numbers off my prop last night and found the rudder cracked where it met the shaft. Pulled it last night at 10 pm and was going to take it in to be welded today. Guy was in the shop at 7 and said it wasnt cost effective to fix. So the interior has some more time while I locate a replacement rudder. Thanks for the responses! |

Pswann, if you are going this option, I would consider Silvercloud rather than cream. This is what CC uses as the base upholstery in its "white" boats now. IMHO , cream upholstery in a white boat looks like it is dirty all the time. Just another suggestion. BKH ------------- Livin' the Dream |
