Every time I read Stang 72's closing quote "Face plants aren't that funny when it's your face",
I can't help but think of this old photo. Since this site favors the old boats and "the good old days"
I don't feel too out of line posting this picture. It was taken in 1972,
I was 17 and behind a Yucatan yellow, 66 Mustang (289 interceptor, 165 hp) A buddy of
mine and I taught ourselves to barefoot.   No one to teach us, no booms, no kneeboards...
just drop a ski and pray for the best. We finally got it.
But not without a few of these. And there have been many more since,
plus about 4 or 5 broken ear drums, in the past 30 some years.

The face plant quote is my wife's favortite that I've brought home from the internet.

Another that I love, I saw on a Mastercraft site- "I wish I was half the man my dog thinks I am."

Nice pic 75

BKH; always love your posts. Just came home from a hot dat on the school bus and the only one home (wife working at Cypress Gardens)is my TN wonder dog, Jo. 75 Tique; Know just what you mean, learned to foot the same way. Took all summer. Still the second best feeling in the world when you make that first step-off of the year....jbear

75 tique...Really great photo!!! I also learned to barefoot with no boom...they were not invented yet. The falls were so fast...but the young body could take it. I remember once trying to step off a ski backwards @40mph...it ended in a back of the head plant and a sliced ear from the O'brien team comp...remember the aluminum tops on those things...still have that ski! If Bob La'point used one,I had to
also!

I now luagh my a-- off at my sons...they will try anything!!!They are learning air 360,s and flips and big air wipe-outs are part of the process. It's funny when it's not my face

My father's favorite laugh was at me learning to deep water start...where you come up with the feet over the line and ride your on your butt until you reach enough speed...I found out that my a-- was not as water tight as a frogs...we needed to get to shore proto and find the nearest restroom.

Can't remember with members' quote is this one ,but I like it and it hits home with me.

       "My wife say's I can't have another,I tell her I can try"

Something like that....Who has that one!

Here's another one I dug up. I was a lot more flexible in those days.
Actually this one is early 80s (San Bernard River, Tx) I still did not have a barefoot suit.
Can you believe I did deep water starts with neoprene shorts and a vest cinched down real tight.
As you can see, this was about the last fall for that vest.

I tried stepping out of a slalom ski in high school and couldn't move my arm for about five minutes afterward. I gave up on barefooting after that.

Oh, come on dchris, it's easy, just follow these simple to follow photo instructions.

step 1: put your foot out

Step 2: Simply step out of the ski

(PS...Before I hear any cute remarks about pink Speedos...
(1) it was the 70s and
(2) I was a competitive swimmer (high school)
and these were all any of us ever wore)

Yes...put your foot out step and ....splat! But that first time you stick it...

Speedo's...never where for me...I wore those dorky looking tight knit striped things you only see in old boating adds...you know the adds where everyone looks like they live in the perfect world...I could have been a poster child dork for one of those! But hey ...now I kinda like that retro crap!

About the vest...We started out with one, it was one of those bulky all foam yellow things. About 20 splats into the morning the thing had pretty well disintegrated. We tried to salvage it with about 5 miles of duct tape, but it was pretty much a lost cause.

75; We all had them stiff ugly yellow vests. My wife had a green one with fake boobs moulded in. Used to use lots of duck tape on those bad boys......jbear
