I just bought a 79 SN dirt cheap and I am wondering what I need to check before I start it up?It has a rebuilt 351 that has never been cranked. It is complete minus starter and distributer.I have both of these parts and will install them this weekend.Should I assume that the water pump from the hull to the engine is bad?I just really don,t know where to start. Any help would be awsome!! Thanx for your time.

Congrats on the new toy! The biggest suggestion is to make sure you get the correct rotation on the starter. My 351 runs backwards. There are great manuals on this site in the reference tab above. The information on the engine tag is translated to tell you which way the engine turns. It will also have the firing order and good info like that. It will only take you a minute to open up the freshwater pump and look at the impeller but if your going to do that may as well have one to replace it just to start off on the right foot. I disconnected the hose from the hull fitting and shoved a garden hose in it and tightened the clamp. Make sure you turn it on max cause when it starts it sucks a bunch! Post a picture and let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the help. The starter is backward rotating so I was told.I am exited about this project because I learned to ski behind a 2001.The boat is in pretty good shape. The finish is okay and the seats have just been redone. All it really needs is buffing and carpet otherwise.
