I have a 68 barracuda that I have begun to restore and before I stated tearing out the floors and foam I had it out on the water, about 4 weeks ago. I just bought it and was not expecting much due to its condition. It sat for a year so the carb is probably gummed up. All in all the boat topped out at just under 35 mph. I know the boat is water logged, the prop is a little banged up and the timing is off a bit. I thought it would at least to 40.

I was having a discussion with a guy this afternoon who has a 70 nautique with a 318, same engine as my boat, and his does near 60 mph in stock form.

What speed is typical for a boat like mine with a dry and properly tuned 318 and what is the correct pitch of the prop?

Thanks!

13 x 13 if there is hull clearance, or 12 x 14 pitch would be right, tuned and running right, I would think, high 40's to 50.

As far as a stock 318 sn running 60, I think he needs to get a GPS!

Chris,
I'm with Gary and I'm sure others will be along shortly to tell you the guy with the 70 that thinks his boat does 60 is sure smoking something. He needs major help. Tell him to log on to CCfan and maybe we can help him with some much needed consulting. 45-46 is a better figure.

Gary is correct that you need to check the clearance of the prop to the hull. 68 was around the time CC changed the Cuda to accept a 13" prop. Previous it was a 12".

Whats' on it now and you didn't mention the engine RPM's
