Hi everybody,
I just purchased a superb 2002 Air Nautique 216.
Among other things I would like to improve, the bow speaker covers are torn, and I would like to know if anyone knows how to repair them quickly without taking the whole upholstery out?
It seems there is a second grid underneath, that is OK.
I'm thinking about simply removing the first torn one with a cutter.
Would it have an impact on the speakers?

Hmmm, do you have a picture? Do you mean the speaker grills or is this like an upholstered piece?

There is no 2002 216, so you either have a 2003 model year boat there, or the classic 21' sport hull.

Hi, thanks for your answers.
I mean the speaker grill. Apparently there is two on top of eachother, one in a greyish tissue (which is torn) and one more solid black plastic type grill underneath. I can't upload pictures there...Maybe cause I'm in Europe...Perhaps if You give me an email or link...My idea was to cut properly the grey tissue, to let see the black grill. But maybe it would cause water to get into the speakers...
About the model, you will find the owner's manual of 2002 216 Air Nautique on the CC website in case you want full specs. Mine is definitely a 2002, produced in May. The tower and windshield are still both black. Also it has a wooden board instead of composite...
The 2002 model was actually the first with the 330 excalibur engine, which replace the GT 40. And this change, strangely, is not on the manual...
I can send you pictures as well...

HW is correct, first year for the 216 was 2003. 2002 was the last year for the GT-40 and the first year for the Excalibur, the changover occured during production that year, once they ran out of GT-40's Excal's were used instead.

You may want to do some searches here and on www.planetnautique.com believe there are some threads with good detail on replacing those cloth speaker covers.

Post some pictures of what you have.

So I guess I have an Air 210 2002 CC with the Exc.
The UK dealer then made a mistake...
Thanks for the precision...

Nope, the 210 is a v-drive. Its just an "Air". Same hull as the '02 Sport.

That is a beautiful boat

I'm wondering if it would be possible to find grills from different design speaker (a little oversized) and have the grill sit over the vinyl but fasten to the speaker in the rear. I think on the newer boats, the grill is raised in that way.

Not a bad idea thanks I will think about it...

That looks great but isn't all that comfortable to sit against.

Nice boat!

True...The real question is: Are those clothes useful in terms of water protection? If not, I just remove them...

I would say they are non aesthetic for the moment...Do you think it will look OK without?

Depends on what the speaker looks like behind there, right? See if you can peak through the little tear in the cloth. If they've already got plastic grills, your're good to go. Or, if they at least have a nice aesthetic look to them like these:

If they just looks like cardboard cones out of a mid 80's Buick, you'd want something covering them.

Umm, doubtful. Id find a way to replace the cloth grills.

Like Quinner alluded to with his (failed) link, the speakers you have are rear mount. I dont believe they have any grills on them. It is likely you'll be looking at the cone of the speaker and some potentially unsightly vinyl/backer as well once that cloth is removed. If the cloth is junk then youve got no choice other than to dig in and see what youre working with!

they are just bow speakers anyway, forget them

Yes, the link above doesn't work for me either, even after the registration process...

That's the kind of grill I perceive underneath...But not a 100% sure. It might be the kind to put back on, after the removal of the clothes...

Think I fixed the link above??

Kapla is the only one on this site who really knows how to get the clothes to come off on a boat

Chances are those speakers are pretty worn anyways. Might think about an upgrade with some cosmetically pleasing covers. Does anyone seat in the front?

Mainly kids and BBS...
I guess I must wait to be on the water to really test the speakers and see if they need to be changed, or just covered...

When I read that PN thread carefully, it sounds like there might be two layers, a cloth layer and a mesh layer. Actually, re-read your original post and this seems to suggest that too.

If this is true, maybe if you cut the outer cloth layer very carefully, the mesh layer would hold up on it's own and look ok.

There is defintely a mesh underneath. So I think the speakers themselves must be waterproof, because neither clothe or mesh are! In this case that the best bet, if the speakers are still Ok...I'll keep you informed. Thanks

The "mesh" is actually screen. The screen, cloth and welt are stapled to a PVC ring that is installed from the front and held in place by screws from the back that are through the backrest and into the PVC ring.. The screen is there for strength should you elbow or hit the speaker area with something as the cloth offers no protection. The only right way to replace the speaker cloth is to remove the backrest and ring.
