I recently had the thought of building a prop "rack" to put on the wall. To do so, I would need a bunch of short sections of tapered 1" shafts... so Im looking for the aft end of any bent or busted shafts you have. Shipping an entire shaft is probably cost prohibitive for this project... but if you have something that would help me out, please let me know!

How about a peg board with long enough hooks to hold a prop or a section of wood picket fence screwed to the wall that you could drive aluminum gutter nails/landscaping timber nails into the slats/ cross members to display the "Ben-ja-min Prop Collection"
I used this idea to hang ski ropes, jackets, etc. in my garage but using coat hooks or ladder hooks to support the weight. I just used deck screws to attach the fence to the garage wall studs. That sucker ain't going no where.

Something like that might work... but I was thinking a little more heavy duty than peg board and hooks. Props are too heavy (and $$$) to risk a drop!
Theyre all safely boxed up for now, but having them readily available and on display in the shed or garage would be kind of cool. I figure if I start collecting shafts now, perhaps Ill have enough to put a rack together in a few years!

I'll try and snap a picture of my set up when I get home and post it here. Geez Tim how props do you have?

Ryan, unless the boat had the Python, then it should have had a 1" shaft.
Pete, what fun would that be?

I guess if you are going to have a few thousand dollars worth of propellors lying around you have to do something with them.
But it does seem excessive.. no worries that you will need a puller to get your prop off the rack?

we get good money for them in scrap metal. Also they make great horseshoe posts.

I use mine as "rock busters" instead of a pick-axe.
Use cheap 3/4" bolts. Spin on the prop nuts, no one would ever know.

Ryan, I just need the last foot of it... if you could cut it down, that would be awesome. If youre willing to forgo the fortune you'd receive for the scrap metal, of course.
Peter, a metal backing plate behind an old wooden ski would be pretty sweet! Im not sure I want to hang the props with straight rod or cheap bolts though- hence the request for tapered shafts. When I collect enough of them, I may have to take you up on your offer to fab something up!

if you collect enough tapered ends and want something built with them let me know, also if you use 7/8 round stock and angle them 60 degrees or so they should be pretty secure as opposed to 90

Thanks Peter! I was definitely planning to angle them a bit to keep the props from sliding off. I like the idea of having the props resting on the appropriate taper, as opposed to a smaller round stock... but maybe thats not necessary. I'll give it some thought!

i may have one for you. Need to confirm if my shaft is bent or not, it is binding at a similar spot every 360 degrees, not good news for me but could be good for you. Not sure I have anything to cut it with though. hacksaw???!!!! ha

Hmm, binding in the same spot on every revolution probably means its bent, as you suspect. A good excuse to get a sweet ARE (and send me your old one)! I would think a hacksaw could do the job... a sawzall would make quick work of it as well!

ya, I was thinking it probably was . should I try to add something to it like wd since it is out of the water? also I havent tried loosening the packing nut.
I need a hacksaw and someone else to saw it! Ha.
I also had this idea to take 2 short 2x4 and stand them on and cut a V in the them. Then rest the shaft in there and spin it. Think I would be able to see the bend?

Im not sure that a binding once every revolution (in the same place) could be anything but a bent shaft... but pull it out and have it inspected first, before you cut it apart!

Binding in one location could also be a coupling in need of re-facing.

well the coupling isnt hooked up to the tranny so I dont think it would be affecting its rotation would it.

Tim
I used to store my props in boxes, but was taking too much shelf space. Last year I cut lengths of 1/2" thread-all and welded the "thread-all studs" on a pc of strap steel. Each stud holds up to three props. I lagged the strap steel to the header above a closet opening where my furnace is. I mark the size/pitch on each prop. Now it is easy to see, and get to any of them.
I could put washers and nuts on the exposed threads to keep them from falling, but have never had a problem.

Or a fretted shaft/coupling bore so the set screw is "kicking" the coupling half.

Steve!!! Do you work for the "pickers" on the side?? Or are some of those props low pitch when you were trying to get the revs up on the 6?

Better get the feeler gauge out or better yet the dial indicator and go through the alignment procedure.
Does the shaft/coupling show any signs of fretting? If you loosen the set screw on the coupling, is there any play?

I dknow, Ill check it. It does show signs of someone beating the crucified out of it to get it off, the bottom of the coupling has several large dents on the lip, indicating less than meticulous care.

so of course my prop is stuck. But while i was messing with it, i shot some liquid wrench in the strut and it seems to remove the drag. Think something could be in there causing drag?

Tim,
I think Steve has me beat on the rack system for props but here is the picture that I promised of my ski rope rack. It's only half a section of picket fence section bought years ago at Lowes. The other half is in youngest daughters room as a towel/coat rack but you get the idea.
