when I purchased my boat the PO had installed http://www.pettitpaint.com/catalog_browse.asp?ictNbr=20 - bottom paint from the water line down. He had the boat in the water for his summer vacation as a grocery getter alongside his houseboat. I am thinking about removing the bottom paint and then wetsanding back the gel coat. Is this just going to be a labor intensive job or is there alot more to consider for the process? (other than safety working with the copper in the paint)

It can be done but I suggest using a paint stripper that states it's safe on fiberglass. Some bottom paints are harder to remove than others. I had made the mistake of using an ablative on the bottom of my X55 (wood hull) and wanted to go back to the traditional bronze. That ablative was a "bear" to get off even using methylene chloride (Zip Strip)

we use Aqua strip at the boat yard i work at. It seems to work well and isnt crazy toxic. It doesnt affect the gel coat at all either.

I have the same problem, po used antifouling. I had considered a sand and polish, but as the boat lives in the water I am going to scrape the old paint and repaint.
A lot will depend on how he sanded the hull before painting it. Maybe do a test area to see the condition of the gel before committing and finding he used a coarse sandpaper.

Sometimes a bottom paint is used to hide other evils. Other times you might find a nice 'oak floor' underneath.
