What insurance company does everybody use? And what amount do yall insure your boat for? I have a 89' 2001 that I just picked up and trying to see what the general consensus is on insurance on something like that.

Global Marine (endorsed by USA Waterski) has been a great broker. Theyve found me true agreed-upon replacement policies for all of my older boats.

I use Voyager Marine Ins. out of Dallas. It is underwritten by Progressive. Agreed value policy for a good price. Haven't had a claim. So I don't know how they are in that department. But they are good at cashing my checks.

I applied with Boat US yesterday, so far so good. Quick, easy communication. I have to pull up my floor to submit a picture of my "fuel system".

Been with Foremost (owned by Farmer's) for some time now. I have an AGV policy which was for a nice replacement value back in 2006 but, unchanged, is now a ridiculous amount for my 12 year old boat and the premiums are still very reasonable.

Some companies require a Self Survey with pictures, especially on older models.

Exactly, self survey with pictures.

I'm not taking anything out that isn't supposed to come out, just the floor panel and behind the backseat.

I have an 89sn insured with Boat US I didn't have to do any kind of self survey. Mine is just under $300 a year for a declared value of $10,000 and the highest coverage on everything else. They are an A rated insurance company so if you have an umbrella policy with another insurance company you can add your boat onto that as well if your interested in more libality protection. I had a $900 policy with State Farm for less coverage for about 3 month before I figured that all out. With Boat US you also get a year Boat US membership and West Advantage Gold membership with West Marine. That gets you a $10 gift certificate for ever $250 you spend there. You can also add their trailering program for $14 a year that covers your trailer and tow vehicle, well worth it in my opinion because AAA will not help you with a boat trailer as I found out the hard way. -Lou

I have used Ski Safe for the last three years. It is very easy to get set up with them and they are site sponsors. I pay $222.00 per year and they are a site sponsor. They do not offer agreed upon coverage for my 1980 boat. I want to move to some one who does, but Boat US wanted me to do the Self Survey and have a flare gun. I just was in a hurry to get on the water three years ago and Ski Safe was very easy to work with. I need to upgrade, but I will probably renew with them this month. I have the bill on my desk.

FYI,

Donald

Donald, call Global Marine- I had no problem getting agreed upon values on my older boats through them. They found me policies with Ace and Progressive, right around $300/year (with high liability limits).

Don't know if Boats US changed their policy but back 3-4 yrs ago they wanted me to get a marine survey done nothing was said about self done back then. What really turned me off was the reason they wanted it - just because it was an inboard. I asked what was the difference did an I/O need one? Their answer was no I/O didn't,I said good bye---

For old boats, I've found Progressive easy to deal with, but make sure you put the amount you're going to eventually want on it as they won't let you increase the agreed upon value without an appraisal.

Oletela, I have a '99 Sport Nautique with a dual-axle trailer. I'm insured with Travelers for an agreed-value of 30k (inc. trailer). I'm on a custom-pac policy that rolls in my homeowners, my vehicle and a personal liability policy, so I don't have a premium handy for ya.

I'm a bit high on the agreed value, even taking the trailer into account, but the difference in premium was not significant so in the event of a total loss, I can easily replace this boat with something similar and newer and not be out of pocket at all.

Hope this helps you....

Again, liability coverage, followed by comprehensive coverage are going to be the biggest contributors to the cost of the premium. Replacement value has little impact in comparison... so stating your replacement value vs. premium cost can be very misleading, as its only telling part of the story.

If you took a Coast Guard boating course you are elegible for a discount, not much but worth mentioning if you took a course. Also make sure your liability covers skiers if you tow. Boat insurance is better through boat people like Ski Safe, Boat US etc. Especially if you ever need to make a claim.

I have had Boat US since I purchased my boat in '94. Have had two claims both paid with no problems. My friend broke his femur behind my boat and they paid his $5K medical deductable even when I only had 1K extra medical. I raised it to $10K after that incident. I hit the bottom of Lake Powell on the first ski run of a 10 day houseboat trip and bent everything. Insurance paid $7K to fix it.

I have State Farm with an agreed value of $30000 and $500 deductible and its $281. I thought that was pretty good, I know we get a discount for having 2 boats insured with them as well.

Jimmy:

Read your profile. Gotta love the Aristocraft, actually a great hull design. Just hope it has the "ever-so-cool" sliding hardtop. Remember fondly as a kid the Steuben County (NY) Sheriff Patrol ran Aristocrafts on Lake Keuka....even cooler still with bubblegum-light and a big star on the side.

What GA lake you on????

Sorry but I do not have a good opinion on Hargerty. I know several ACBS members who have had problems with them. I'm not someone to fall for a service/product just because they go to lot's of boat shows and give away key chain "floaty's". They would be my very LAST choice for insurance.

I use Boat US as well. Process was quick!

I got my quotes before I purchased and just phoned them when I purchased to start coverage. I didn't have to do any kind of survey as my 1999 SN and trailer replacement values were within their book value range. I did get quotes for older boats I was planing to restore. In those cases, I would need to present survey info as one would expect.

$300k liability ($900k for fuel spill coverage, crazy but understandable I guess). BoatUS offers a watersport pkg for additional $30. Covers $5k equipment, $5k extra medical and automatic Tournament Coverage in addition to the $1k pp. I figure all someone has to do is snag a $200 ski line/handle and it pays for it self for 7 yrs.

Anyhow, I think I am all in for around $260 yr. and I got a sticker!

There are a lot of additional features BoatUS and other marine specialty insurance companies offer.

I don't know how far you got into it with them but an I/O or an outboard at the time I checked did not require a marine survey only an inboard. A number of years ago I had them and it was not required so why now? When I questioned them why an inboard and not the I/O they had no answer, so no thanks.

Hey Gary,

In my case, they assumed it had an inboard... I just confirmed it. I spoke to three different agents getting rates for three different inboards before I bought mine too. None needed a Survey. My Dad didn't for his back in early 90s when he switched to BoatUS.

The only reason I would think they would need a survey for an inboard would be if the OE for that model was an OB or I/O and it was modified or if this was an older boat as the value could range significantly (just my guess).

Anyone else ever have this issue?

Surveys are more common with wood hulls. The underwriters do not want to insure a rotten hull that may go under anytime.

I use Progressive and have an agreed value policy of $10,000 for my '89. It runs about $160/yr. This is the same company and policy I had on my 1990 Malibu that was totaled in a car accident a few years ago. They were very helpful during the claims process and I recieved a check for the full amount in just a few weeeks. Also, the accident (not my fault)and claim did not affect my premiums when I got my new boat.

Ive stated this over and over, but I'll do so again. Having a generous agreed upon replacement value in your policy is nice- but it is not a large driver in premium cost, in my experience. The single biggest driver is liability coverage (I would consider 100k/300k to be the bare minimum). Without that piece of information, its impossible to know if youre getting a good deal or not- if you have 500k of liability, its a great price, if only 10k, not so much.

Progressive may not charge a lot more for a higher agreed upon value, but I can't get them to budge on raising the agreed upon value without an appraisal, which seems odd as they don't tie the initial agreed upon value to an appraisal. We'll probably have to find another company to get the coverage we want. Who appraises old Correct Crafts? Lesson learned, get the agreed upon value you'll want after your done restoring the boat when first insuring the boat.

I appraise them all the time, don't you?

Usually if I don't pay what Tim says they are worth he buys them before me... so I just go with his estimate.
