I know early trans called for straight 20w. but its more common to ran them with Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) TYPE DEX/MERC III, regular , no synthethic.
On the tranny you are having a dirty neutral. There´s no fix for that. Looks like you will need a rebuilt in the near future. Use it like that until it gets worst...

What year is your transmission?
Also, I've seen PCM and B/W transmissions turn slightly forward while in neutral. My '96 has always turned forward slightly when starting (both the original transmission and a brand new one--the original one had some external torque stress, nothing internal, so replaced). It seems that they will sometimes turn slightly when in neutral (also experienced it with an old BW 1:1 in a different brand tournament boat many years ago).
Kapla, what is the cause of a dirty neutral? I don't know enough about these transmissions, but I am assuming that the plates are somehow not separating enough. Still, that doesn't explain why I get some turning at start up, even with a new transmission.
My transmissions was filled with Dextron III when it was new, even though the manual said 20w oil. Does anyone know if you can easily switch or have had experience switching from 20W to Dex/Merc type III? That would be helpful for everyone to know.

true cause is from the forward clutch pack slipping and the plates cannot dis-appate the heat quickly enough, thus the heat captured in the plates will cause them to warp, the forward pack runs on about .018 clearance which means when assembled correctly you can put an .018 feeler blade between the clutch plate stack up. when the plates warp you lose that .018 clearance and now the plates are actually touching eachother and will cause the transmission to drag...orst case scenary would be the plates welding themselves together and then the transmission will lock into forward and at times stall the engine when puttin into revers because you are locking the transmission up

btw, slipping is not normal, that is the root cause of a dirty neutral

Luka, Eric is the best with the trans's. It's his business. He stated your problem very well. The bottom line is you need a rebuild.

If you change from oil to ATF, drain & refill at least 3 times to flush it. (Run it some each time, of course) It is best to manually drain the cooler & lines by unhooking them.

dex II or dex III? It is possible that with the change of oil will reduce the slipping?

can this dirty nuetral happen from a badly adjusted/out of adjustment shifter cable? not going all the way into nuetral? I'm just wondering.

You need to understand how the marine trans really works. The shift lever is attached to a valve body that routes oil and it's pressure to activate the clutch packs. It's not like a manual trans where the foot clutch is mechanically moving a clutch plate.
