I had the upholstery re-skinned over the winter. I removed the pieces from the boat myself and delivered them to the upholsterer. The piano hinge at the top of the observer’s seat was anchored by a screw into a tee nut attached to the backside/ inside of the seat frame. The tee nuts had loosened up over time. Rather than fix or replace them, the upholsterer removed them and suggested wood screws. To me, this is not optimal since they have greater chance of loosening up in this type of use. I now can’t get access to the inside/backside of the seat frame, so tee nuts are not an option. Any suggestion as to what I could use that would be the equivalent of the tee nuts? ------------- Jim |

Jim, The T nuts are in there since wood screws or even fully threaded type "A" sheet metal screws won't handle the load. I suggest removing enough staples to get the T nuts back in the ply. If they are loose, epoxy them in. Take a large hole saw & cut a plug around where the Tee nut went. Make a mating plug to refit, putting the tee nut in that. You might want to epoxy in a couple of thin wood 'slats', off-center of the hole (a door frame shim would work) to give a back stop. Then epoxy the plug back in. If we're talking about the 97 in his avatar he doesn't have wood for seat backs. He doesn't mention wood in his post just wood screws. I would remove the staples and either insert new tee nuts if possible or attach a 1/8 thick backer strip of aluminum or stainless and through drill and fasten with nut and bolt if there is room. Yeh Alan sounds like he has a 97 no wood. Jim not quite sure what the problem you are describing is do you have a picture of it? Yes, it is fiberglass. I turns out that it is not the problem that I expected. The tee nut does not anchor on the hard backside/inside of the upholstered panel. The hinge connects to the fiberglass seat structure, then the upholstered panel attaches by a separate fastener to the seat structure. I can attach the hinge using nuts and bolts. I’ve run into this issue a number of times with other boats. The above advice will come in handy next time. Yes JoeinNY did take the world’s slowest SN2001 off my hands so I could buy the boat that I should have bought the first time. All good now. ------------- Jim |
