I have been using 2000 gift and I'm kinda scared to go any rougher but I can still see the 2001 where my original stickers were. What am I doing wrong.... Depressed and frustrated.

2000 won't touch it. don't worry the gell is thick.

drop it to 400, then 600. 1200 if your ambitions.

Then hit the buffer (not polisher), wool pad, and 3M super duty. Then a lighter duty compound or glaze with a different pad.

You may never remove it all but your going to have to go for a coarser grit paper. Mine was pretty rough and in spots used 220. Are you doing it by hand?

Andrew,
The PO of my Tique had named the boat. The decals came off but I never got rid of the ghost shadow no matter how much sanding I did. I ended up re gelling the transom. Don't worry since the new graphics will cover up your ghost shadow. I didn't have that option.

Fellas I'm getting worried. I went with the 400 and I got through the lettering on half the transom but right when the letters disappear I start to see little little black specs. :( I'm going to stop And not take it that far... Jus gonna have to go back with the exact stickers I guess.

Has any one seen this before??

By hand. We stopped and have decided to do 600 on the rest of the boat on up. Thanks fellas. I figured something was wrong when it took all morning to make that stuff disappear. It's been in the sun it's whole life. Probably just due to that

Were you thinking of something else? Had you changed you mind from when you started the http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=24815&PN=1&title=1986-sn-2001-complete-restore" rel="nofollow - "complete restore" thread? Be careful how you use the word "restore".
