I had this problem last season (1996 SN 196), but it was not that bad and was pretty easy to live with, seems its got worse over the winter.
So, when I engage forward gear and move the throttle the gear engages at about 1100-1200 rpm.Same in reverse.
Im guessing in need to lenghten the throttle cable so the box is engaged just be the revs start to rise dramaticlly?
Can someone confirm im on the right track ??
(If i shorten the gearbox cable with this disturb the reverse part of its use.)

Yup, since it does the same in forward and reverse, adjust the throttle cable.
