First off - Thank you for all of the help everyone has given so far. I purchased a 1967 Correct Craft Mustang a month ago and have used this web site as a guide for restoration for usage (not shows or anything like that).
From the web page I have gotten new step pads, gas tank, gotten the engine running great, etc.
I was in the process of redoing the floor pursuant to a lot of what I read on this site. I was going with the fiberglassed plywood. Midway through this process I decided I was also going to redo the skeleton frame under the floor (everything except the two main stringers). I ripped out all foam and parts of the skeleton.
The skeleton was pretty rotten. I am now looking at the stringers. They are solid but wet. From what I have read on the site I can wait several months and then reglass them, etc.
My question for you is what are your thoughts on also redoing the stringers? Is engine placement difficult to do on a new set? What other questions am I not thinking of? Am I better off just waiting the time on existing stringers, reglassing and then putting in the new skeleton with new foam.
Thank you for all of the help and the great resource www.correctcraftfan.com has been.

Brimeg...first of all "gotten" is not a word!Sorry man , my mother was an english teacher...of cousre Eye kan,t spel 4 sh-t!!!
If you are sure there is no rot you could dry them out...you can speed the process up some by using a dehumidifier and following up with heat lamps...then let it dry a bit on it's own...when completley dry...reglass.If there is rot...replace!
If you do replace the stingers, you can line your engine up and drill your motor mounts & make your adjustments...at that time post it and we will help(it can be a bit tricky)!
If you are sure the stringers are solid ...I would reglass....my 2 cents worth. Good luck and keep things posted!!!!

Ok...gotten is a word...just akward usage there! I'm just messin arround!
I think you should dry them out and see how solid they are at that point. You can always make the decission to replace...but if it's not needed...why do it! The reglassing is not a big chore.Good luck.

Thanks for the vocab lesson. . .
Stupid question. . . rot is where wood is missing correct?
My mind keeps thinking replace so I am not sitting dead for six months waiting for wood to dry. Any thoughts on this logic . . or is six months of time well worth the saved head aches in engine alighment, etc.
Thanks for the help,
Brian

You need to check to see if any wood is soft!If there is rot,it may not be missing but could be soft...and it will only get worse. If you have areas on the stringers where the glass has given up...you can probe with a screw driver to see if the stringer is solid. In most cases...most of the stringers are solid and only a few sections need replacing. You don't have to do all! You can mate sections in as well.Maybe replace any sections that are questionable. If you are unsure...replace!
As far as aligning the engine ...don't let that stop you from proceeding with replacing stingers! We will get to that when (or if) you need help! You certainly want to make sure the engine is mounted on solid stringers!Critical!!!

I replaced all stringers this summer and will probably reinstall the engine in a week or two. It was a big job, but the hardest part was finding the time. Right now I need to shim the secondary (outside) stringer on one side to get the floor even. I'll let you know how the install goes.
BTW stang72 - If you're going to correct grammar and spelling, fix you signature line.

You could leave the old stringers as-is (mine were soft end to end) and add an aluminum frame that ties the 4 engine mounts together and gives the mounts more surface area to ride on. We did this a few years back with 3" by 4" aluminum angle set to the inside of the stringers and it looked great.
Another solution on a boat with only one "soft" mount was to remove the rot in the area of the mounts and pour in epoxy that bonds to the glass. Drill and tap your home.

Thanks for all of the tips guys. After further inspection I have decided to replace the stringers.
Currently, engine is out and stringers are being removed and replaced. I will keep you posted if I run into problems along the way or when time to reinstall the engine.

64 Im interested in reinforcing my stringers while I have the motor mounts off. Would you share some more insight on how you did this? Did you make a square, or just put angle on each stringer the length of the mounts or did you run all the way front to back? I checked today and a local shop wants 6.30 a foot for AL 2x3. Steel of the same is 2.30. AL is 1.4 lbs a foot steel is 4.1.If I put 4 feet on each side we are just talking 30 lbs. How did you connect the motor mount to it? Thanks

Hey everyone. . .
If you follow posts at all I ended up picking up a 1978 Ski from photoshop as well.
Well both boats (1978 Ski and 1967 Mustang) ended up needing to be totally gutted. I have ripped everything out and put new stringers in. My wife is ready to kill be as between doing this before work and after work I have not been home much.
The new stringers are in and for being the first time I am rather impressed. I marked the motor mounts in several ways on the side walls and stringers as I replaced one at a time so I have a good idea of how to put them back in.
Couple of questions . .
1. What is the proper way to continue with the job ((a)floor, carpet, engine, upholstery (b) engine, floor, carpet, upholstery, (c) engine, floor, carpet, upholstery? Or something else I am not thinking?
2. Anything special when mounting the engines back in the boat. I am comfortable with aligning the engine (or so I think) but want to make sure I am in the right spot. Both boats will have adjustable mounts so this should help.
Thanks for the help. . .not sure what else I am missing to ask. O - I need to find out how to post pics so everyone (if you are interested) can see how these have gone.
Thank you again for the all of the help and for being such a great resource,
Brian

Brian,
Good to hear you kept them both! Before the wife kills you...get her involved! maybe she would like to pick out interior or hang out in the garage some!!! I think you will enjoy the differences in the two boats!
Hey...your in Illinois right? Check out the post "classic owners reunion".
Order of installation...my 2 cents worth.
Drop the engine in first and align.(BTW...clean bilge areas well first while every thing is out)
Next add the floor sections on the sides and up front...leave the section that covers the drive line out for now. Now you can stand on the sides as you put parts back together.Make sure the floor section that covers the drive line can be removed for future access to stuffing box etc.
Re-carpet and add interior!
Are you thinking of adding any closed cell foam? If so ...you might want to do so before the engine is in.
Post them in the diary sect. you can have up to 4 pic's there!!!
