I was fooling around lastnight trying to prep my boat for an engine instal. when i checked the transission fluid it was full all the way to the top and it looked pink and milky. im not sure if this is normal.
Im an engine and everything else guy, but trannys are not my thing.
Pls excuse me if this is a stupid question. but i just cringe at the thought of the only part that i was told was good is in fact bad. I know that the guy i bought the boat from ran it last year before he cracked the block.

Sounds like water in the fluid.

If it's milky looking it's got water in it and you should change it. Dextron 3 ATF is what I use. You'll need to remove the cooler lines and flush as well. I have seen some trans get water in them though the vent in the top or by the cooler being bad. From your limited post, it sound like you bought this boat with the engine out? Did the trans get rained on or something? The transmissions in these boats are nothing to be scared of... you can download a manual here & there's lot's of us to help if you elect to take it apart, Me? depending on how long it's been out of use with water in it,I would change to fuild and try it...

Sorry about the limited info i just hate to be long winded.
but yes i did buy the boat without the engine in it. The guy i bought it from did not cover the boat even with no engine in it, but i have
ALWAYS covered it.

If i drain the fluid and replace with new what are my chances of the transmission not being screwed.

thanks to all who can help Its nice to know i can ask for help and get trustworthy info.

by the way its a 78 ski tique. ALWAYS

All depends on how much H2O is in it and how long, 50/50 chance? If not that long,I would try and run it, these trans are pretty tough, it may delay shifting or "creep" in gear for a while. If you do run it as is, you'll need to change it a few more times till it stays red. Again w/out saying, be sure to check & clean the cooler & lines. I bought a older "uncovered" boat that the PO left the engine cover closed BUT the drain stopped up with leaves and rain water took over the trans... I did have to rebuild it but it sat for two years before I got it.

Thanks for the hope.

What do i look for if the cooler is bad?

My PO did have the cover down but like yours the drain was stopped up with leaves. but not much water was sitting in the bilge maby a 1/4 of an inch.

hmmm...only 1/4 of a inch? It don't rain where you bought that boat?
I checked my cooler - put a pipe plug in one of the oil inlet fittings, using a air regulater, I put like 10 psi on the other oil line fitting, droped in a 5 gallon bucket of water and watch for bubbles. In freshwater use only, they rarely go bad. Big deal is getting ALL debris out of water inlet hoses, leaves etc... A local radiator shop can maybe fix cooler if it leaks. My guess is rain water filled hull past trans vent and later slowly leaked out hull drain. How long has boat sit up w/out running?

its been off the water for about a year and a halfe. maby not that long. It does rain alot here
i live in western North Carolina. i guess the water just leaked out, like you said, or my PO drained the boat prior to me getting there.

I vote for the PO leaving water in the boat that froze and messed up the transmission cooler at the same time it froze and cracked the previous engine block. Of course thats a more likely scenario up here in NY than down there in NC, either way mackwrench is offering good advice..

I'd bet on the tranny being good to go, but the cooler has a leak. I've seen cooler installations that are in a low point and do not drain well. Newer boats have a drain on them but our old boat does not so we plumbed her in the vertical position.

I suggest running on a fake a lake for a few minutes with new fluid. Kill the engine and change out a second time....maybe a third time just to be on the safe side.

Debris in hull, plugs drain, rain fills up past transmission vent on top or in through seals, water enters trans.... If cooler is good thats the only place water can get in. Flush it a few times, run it to make sure theres no Fuild leaks and enjoy.

If your boat is a '60's, it should have Type A transmission fluid in it originally.

Tim, Can you still get type "A" fuild? I thought all ATF was 10 weight motor oil with special addivatives. I have used dextron 3 sinc rebuild a few years ago, but maybe it's holding up because the plates, seals etc... have only been exposed to Dex. 3. Sometimes the different additaves change the way seals seal?

Type A is the old kind. My local NAPA keeps some on hand, they usually keep it in stock because some people use it in old farmall tractors I think. I changed mine last year by using one of those suction pumps, and didn't know about mixing what was left in there with dexron 3. I didn't know if it would affect the clutches.

I don't think mixing is a good idea. Besides the clutch surfaces, the input and output shaft seal may start to leak. I don't reccomend it but I have over the years seen just about anything in these transmissions though, including hyd. oil, power steering oil, regular engine oil etc... they all some how functioned, but it will not work with water in it! botoon metions above his CC is a '78 year so I would think Dextron 3 which took the place of dextron 2 & "mercon" ford type ATF would be OK to use.

i use dextron3 in all the trannys I service..(never serviced a 60's with type "A" though)..although water is never good in any transmission the old girls stand up much better because the clutchs are bra** lined not fiber bonded...if the cooler checked out good as you say it did then have you checked how well the dip stick seal is...pump the oil/water out...fill it with ATF and keep an eye on it...like Mackwrench said "there no big deel"..(just take note which way the pump arrow goes)if you do take it apart..

cheeres

Here's the type that I use. The older CC's like my Mustang use type A.
