Hello,

The situation is this: I am a first time Sk owner. I am trying to do a little patch work on the boat as well as refinish the outside paint. I have been told that the paint job on the boat now is not the original paint. As you can see in the pics. Where the boat is scratched you can see red in some spots gray in some. I really don't mind the color of the boat now but if i keep it this way i would have to fill in the scratches and refinish. I also thought i might want to sand the boat down to its original coat(Which i think is RED). The paint on it now is not gel coated i am told. I feel that i need some idea of the hull color before i pick color for carpet or seats. So From Experience what would be less expensive to do. Please feel free.

Youre correct- that paint was done in a style mimicking the 1990-1993 Correct Crafts.

Since it appears to be in very rough shape, I would strip it off and see what you have underneath. Restoring the original gel would be the preferred solution.

I agree with Tim, plus the red deck on red hull is a great look!

I'm going through the same process as time allows on my project Skier. I wet sanded with 600 grit on the transom with great results.

Joe mentioned it may be best to use some 200 grit dry just to remove the paint and then wet sand to bring back the gel. That theory will be tested on some rainy day this summer.

I understand best solutions, but life has also blessed me with my second child 15 days ago so funds are down, but i can't wait much longer to get this puppy in the water. Bought it cause my wife and first child both love to ski and boat. So I am trying to act quickly and inexpensive and hopefully have it in the water by the 4th. If i were to keep the paint on it how would i fill the scratches in the hull. Just to let you know i am not a very mechanical person. I am not scared of the work just unsure how to do some of the body work. Any Help would be appreciated

Theres no reason to fix the scratches in order to use the boat- theyre cosmetic only. Just put it in the water and plan to fix it in the off season.

For the interior, I would match it to the eventual color (red) or keep it neutral (white). No sense in matching the current paint job, especially since its in poor shape.

Wow that looks like that same Hull i have. Do you know what year that is. My title says 72 but i have a hard time accepting that. How long would did it take to strip that boat and what products and tools did you use.

Phil,
I agree with everything said. Get it in the water now and remove the paint off season. Trying to fix scratchs in paint are difficult and the reason body work on a car usually involves complete body panels.

The green Skier above is a '72, we believe. Why do you have a hard time believing yours is the same? The last year that colored hulls and decks were common was '73. I believe it was communicated to you that your boat is likely a '71-73 Martinique.

There are some paint strippers available (like Capt Lee's 'Spra strip) that are safe to use on fiberglass/gelcoat. That would be my first mode of attack. If that doesnt cut it, then sanding will take the paint off.

as far as patching the nose of the boat and the eye in the front, are we looking at major construction or a minor project. What should i do first patch the whole then sand the whole boat or patch after stripping boat?

Get it down to the original gelcoat and go from there. When patching an area like that, you'll want the original color restored to the best of your ability (especially in the immediate surrounding area), which will allow you to do a more accurate color match.

I agree. Run it as is this summer and then take your time to do it right in the offseason.

Mine is a 72 Skier. I wouldn't doubt yours being a 72, but I would question the model. Your bow looks to be too long for it to be a Skier or Ski Nautique. Maybe an early Martinique?

I sure wouldn't let the outside hold you back on the carpet but what about the inside? That boat has seen plenty of hard usage. That and it being a 72 tells me the chances are high there are stringer issues. What have you done to check them? Have you checked the strut/shaft/log/engine alignment?

Regarding the hull appearance, I suggest you read the responces again. Yes, you are impatient! Paint? I thought you agreed to see what the original gel looked like!

I have check stringers and they are good to go. had to replace acouple of boards on floor but is solid as can be now. Not sure how to check the strut/shaft/log/engine alignment. But am open for suggestions. I tried to explain to everyone on the site that i am very green when it comes to boats. Especially redoing them.

Tell us what you find after taking the feeler gauges to the space between the coupling halves.

What boards did you replace? Any details on how you determined the stringers are "solid"?
