Can someone advise on the best practice on trailer tires.. To have balanced or not ? I am getting a new set of 14" 5 lug trailer wheels from local WM or Northern Tool. I know these are not balanced should I take them to a tire shop and have them balanced ?

I agree - get them balanced. I was shocked to see how much it took to balance the 12" on my Tee Nee.

The SAE chart for a 1/2-20 says 565 inch pounds, Of course you could have asked at the place that balanced the tires but, they probably wouldn't be able to answer the question - we all know how they use the impact's!!!!

Pete, is that less then 50 ft-lbs?? Seems awfully low??
If the wheels are steel I would imagine 80-100 ft-lb, Aluminum would be less.
Had a set of Ronal alloy wheels on a vehicle that were very specific, learned the hard way after a Good Year store installed them incorrectly and a few hundred miles later on the highway while towing my boat the truck was wobbling/wandering, pulled over to find studs missing and one wheel down to (2) lug nuts. Lucky for me they had "torqued to 120" right on the invoice, which was wrong, and they picked up the tab on tow bill and repairs including 4 new wheels.

565 divided by 12 = 47 ft/lbs.

torque them as hard as you can by hand...then when you get a flat you can get them off. I've never had a wheel fall off or lug nuts loosen up.

All I did was quote SAE specs. If you want to go more that's up to you.
Chris, The 50 lbs is easy for you but that's just under half of my body weight!! tougher for me!!!

The PO had torqued mine up to an inch of thier life, combine this with dumping in and out of the water when I came to remove the wheels to rivet the fenders back on I broke 3 sockets and had to use a 6ft bar to get the buggers undone, If this had happened on the road it would have been a total nightmare. I greased up the nuts and went with 60 ft/lbs.
