Ouch I got something stuck in my zipper, the first person to answer my post is volunteering to help bandage it up.

Channel locks or a better term is slip joint pliers?? Some of us old guys even call them "water pump pliers".
Well, maybe "channel locks" are what this back yard hack uses?

Don't take yourself down to Cooters level.

Brian, just swing in to your local Home Depot or Lowes and pick up that wrench in Pete's first post in the plumbing section. It's used on basket strainers. Works perfectly on a packing nut because the handle is so small you can get it into tight spaces. I picked up mine for like 10 bucks.
Maybe this thread will help!

Thanks Brett. Did you ever do the drive shaft packing on the ss? I imagine it is similar to my bfn, a blind job and no room for wrenches but for ten bucks I'll try it!

Nah, they only charged me $65- to do it at Orlando Nautiques! I didn't even have to pull the interior for them, it was a no-brainer on a v-drive to go ahead and let them do it at that price!

65 bucks...? Guess I need to go to Orlando.

I've got a 75 Century V-Drive with a leaking packing nut and absolutely no visibility or working space. I'd recently hacksawed my wrenches in half to fit, and then spent about 1/2 hour messing with it till the mirror was underwater and coated with oily bilgewater, with no budge........
