I have a 68 289 Mustang. I can't decide whether I have a tired motor or the wrong prop. A friend has an identical boat and gets 800 more RPM. Does anyone know what pitch I should be using for skiing?

swap props and see if that is your problem. you should have a 12x12 or a 13x13.
DO NOT trust your tach and do a side by side run.
you might have mechanical issues, but fords are hard to kill. my separator was down to 90 psi cylinder pressure, but will still get within 5% of the original top speed. make sure your secondary is working.

Also, it wasn't mentioned if your friend's identical boat runs 5-10 mph faster as a result of potentially higher rpm. Does his get out of the hole much or any faster? If both boats exhibit the same or very similar performance characteristics, then I'd say your tach is probably off as Tom alluded to. And what rpm does your engine turn vs your buddie's? They should turn somewhere between 4000 and 4500 rpm.
