So my 79 Ski Nautique bastard boat has had a load-up and hard to start when warm issue ever since we put it together.
Bear in mind the boat is running a GM 5.7 Votec with the Mercruiser GM bow tie 280 intake and an AFB carb, not Holley but all Mercruiser high performance stuff. ( I did run a Volvo big block water pump over that Merc pump for a million reasons) It would run fine but after a while it would load up and stall at idle, smell fat and be hard to re-start.
Two days ago while lying awake at 2:00 AM trying not to scratch the poison ivy on my arms it came to me.>>>>
I needed a wedge.
The AFB(Carter, Edelbrock, Weber whatever) has two floats that run fore and aft with the axles being aft. The 1:1 drive line is a pretty steep installation. After going through the carb, checking floats levels and pump pressure I could still see the counter weight wells fill up with gas then the trouble would start.

So a dig through the the boxes in my shop produced a wedge, 5$ at Napa bought two gaskets, 4$ more in longer studs and it is fixed.
She runs perfect and restarts with a glance at the key like it had MPI.

I am very happy.
Have a great weekend everyone. get wet!

I love it when these "gremlins" get worked out.   Nice job!
