Joel,
Is the strainer for the new S&S or a replacement for the SN? If I had to take a shot at it, you want it for the new boat. How bad is the water it's going to be in? FYI, up north, the water is so clean, a strainer really isn't needed. I have none on any of my boats and have never had a problem.

This is for the new boat. I went with the 50 mesh and it looks pretty small. Definitely smaller than the mesh on the Sherwood version. Probably not a problem up north (where the boat will reside) however around here I'll have to keep an eye on it I suppose. Even after 1 outing on a local lake, I had a decent amount of crap in the trans cooler input screen. Not enough to affect temps, but surprising none the less hence the prompt to get the strainer.

Joel,
If the 50 plugs up too quick, just order the 20. A 20x20 is still pretty fine.

UGH. Just ordered the 80, figuring bigger had to be bigger. DAMMIT.

Mesh is the number of holes per square inch. With only 20 instead of 80, the holes are bigger. Next time your over at McMaster, take a look at one of their explanation pages. In this case, search "wire mesh" then click on "about".

May as well order the 20 and have the whole collection! I can change the strainer based on dissolved solids in the particular water I'm skiing, LOL.

Just an update in case anybody looks this up in the future: the 50 mesh is fine. After two days in the nastiest water you could possibly test a strainer in- milfoil/shallow water/muck central, it was fine. The smaller mesh filters out a surprising amount of silty minutia that I can't believe would previously circulate through the engine, FWIW, but it did not get anywhere NEAR full or clogged or even close the whole weekend. Really happy with the 50 mesh.
