I have a 1991 Nautique that started acting-up this past year....actually it might have started the year before, becuase I replaced the carb thinking it was running rich.
This summer I experienced a falure to restart after a couple of sets. The first time I just waited thinking I had flooded the engine. Then checked and noted it had no spark. I felt the module and it seemed hot so I put a wet towel on it.....wall'a is started.
Checked with Woody and he said the module was going out and PCM stopped producing it.....$750 and they would install a kit. I went to SkiDim they had the kit and after Vince gave me an education I installed the kit. It all now looks like what I remember the engine looking like in the 70's. Clean, breakerless, runs perfect. It lost that cold hessitation....seems smoother. It took a day and a half.....after going through it once I think I could do the same job in less than 4 hours.
I have now invested too much time and parts. I bought this boat new. I compete, so I want to stay up-to-date. I installed GT40-P heads which upped the hp to around 285, new carburator, Perfect Pass, four blade.....it stacks-up with the best, 2002 and newer.
It does seem like I have done a lot to keep this boat, but I paid about 17K in 91, would pay 35K in 05, added about 3K in recent time, would get 14K if I sold it.....probably ahead of the game.....no plan for selling anytime soon.

guess what guys.....went out today and after getting rid of old PCM ignition I had the very same problem.....after running for 20 minutes, stop the engine for 5 and it would not restart....no spark out of the coil.....2 hours later engine fired and acted like nothing was wrong WTF???? Back to the drawing board.

Well, now you have a coil instead of the Pro-tec control module. I would suspect a bad coil. Another common cause of this symptom is a bad ballast resistor, but I think you would not have one on your breakerless setup especially since converting from Pro-tec.
What did you do with your old Pro-tec parts?

Well david.....the old PCM Management system went out with the trash because it was running so well and knew from all indications I did the right thing.........but after all said and done, I would rather ski than tinker, I turned it in and bought a new one. I'll let the experts deal with it. I am sure it is something simple and stupid. Who ever get this boat is going to get a hell of a deal.
