Subject: CCF Member needs help-Scam?
Date Posted: September-20-2012 at 10:59am
I received an email from a CCF member this morning saying they were in England and got mugged and needed a loan. Anyone get the same email? Outside of this site, no one would know that I know this person. Co-incidence or is someone searching CCF to scam?

A common scam. I got a similar email from a friend who was mugged in England, unlikely since I'd seen him here in town that morning.

LOL There are a LOT of Muggins over here...don't trust any of us...
The persons email account has been compromised and they should change thier password immediately, they should also be careful on re-use of password between email accounts and paypal / ebay etc, best thing to do is change them all and make them unique!!!
This is an email my partner sent me and everyone else on her contact list a few months back

Hi,
I came down here to Madrid,Spain for a short vacation unfortunately i was mugged at the park of the hotel where i stayed, all cash, credit card and cell were all stolen from me but luckily for me i still have my passports with me.
I have been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and my flight leaves in few hrs from now but I'm having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let me leave until i settle the bills..I am so confused right now and thank God i wasn't injured because I complied immediately.
Well all i need now is just $1,550.00 USD. You can have it wired to me via Western Union. Please let me know if you will able to help me out so i can send my information to you. I promise to pay you back as soon as i get back home.

Must be the scam of the week. I received another this afternoon from a local real estate broker that I do not know and she's in the UK with the same problem. She needs 1350 lbs.

Here's the email guys that 'Gary' sent out to several of us this morning.
I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, my family and I came down here to (Buckingham shire) United Kingdom for a short vacation, unfortunately we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed all cash, credit card and mobile phone were stolen off us but luckily we still have our passports with us.
We've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all the bad news is our flight will be leaving in less than 8-hrs from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills.
Am freaked out at the moment! I'll need your help (LOAN) financially of 1,200 Pounds. I promise to make the refund once we get back home. Please let me know if you can help and i need you to keep checking your email because it's the only way i can reach you.
Gary
It's amazing "Gary" that they took everything BUT your passports, and yet you still have the means to email your fellow CCFans and ask for money. Why could you not acess your bank accounts for the much needed money and how dare you show up in England and not let our British CCFans know you were there! Now THAT'S a Crime!

Its really interesting to see how these emails change slightly and become more believable and its understandable how some people fall for them...
From the one I received several months ago there were some obvious issues with the email, asking for $ when in Spain, referring to a "Mobile Phone" as a "Cell" (UK and US differences) and also Asking for money to be Wired via Western Union.
In the one that Gary sent out the wording is much more believable, "Vacation", "Cell" asking for the money in pounds and no mention of Western Union.
Its a clever Social Engineering scam, dupe people into giving out thier passwords and then use thier account(s) to social engineer friends and family into sending money, its a profitable business otherwise it wouldn't be happening!
Here is another scam that has been hitting people over here for a while.

The kind people who stole my email list also deleted a few months worth of emails, and deleted all of my contacts. Yahoo recovered my contacts, and are working on getting back the emails. Lesson learned.

Wouldn't Gary from the US ask friends for money in dollars, not pounds? Not the brightest scammer.
