Nichole,
I suggest going with the AME double taper shaft so you don't need to mess with the heat shrink coupling on the single taper. The cost is the same. What's up with your old shaft? Is this still from May when your BF wrecked the boat?

Nicki, he isn't paying and can't drive??? I'm just messing around. I have another source that is much more affordable I can get older shafts from. I could get you a new replacement for 198.00. Like Pete said, The double taper is much more friendly if you are doing the job yourself. I ended up using a clamp style coupling on mine so I didn't have to heat the coupler to install it.

So I talked to the Nautique dealer and he said that we can't use a double taper on our boat. It has to be a single taper

Your first mistake is talking to a dealer about a 35 year old boat. What was their reasoning?

I just removed a shaft from a 74 Skier. It has the coupling on it. I can check it for straightness and would sell it if it was the right size. I can measure tomorrow.

I agree it was a mistake. I too would love to hear the reason. He's so full of it, I can smell it through the computer!!

It was a guy from the white lakes web site or nautiqueparts.com. Now I know not to talk to them.

I knew when I read that that is was one of "those" dealers. I have a lot more faith in Pete than in those dealers. I was surprised to read on and find out it was White Lake. You would think they would know better. But on the other hand, my brother called White Lake about some support related to his Buick Universal V6 in his Skylark and they told them Correct Craft never used that motor. Oh well. Like said above, dealers and 35-40 year old boats don't mix real well. I called a local dealer (who does sell inboards (Tiges) so you would think they would know something.) All I was looking for was a prop/shaft key. He was flummuxed. He asked me what motor I had ( you know the drill, so he can look up the part number in a catalogue) I told him what motor I had was irrelevant but humored him and told him it was an OMC. He didnt believe that OMC ever built anything other than I/Os. I thanked him for his time and ordered my key from white lake.

Hey...that's not as bad as my trip to Auto Zone when I was looking for a carb gasket. When I asked for a manifold to spacer gasket for a 351W he asked me if it was a Ford or a Chevy. It got better...I asked him how long he'd been working at Auto Zone and he said 7 years. Really....I didn't think that was possible...a lot of boat dealers aren't much better unfortunately.

Before I was resolved to doing all my purchasing online, I would go to the local marinas up on Cape Cod. Pretty much the only question they know to ask was "what year Mercruiser do you have?" I don't have a mercruiser, I have a 351 ford PCM. "Yeah, its tough to get parts for those aftermarket conversions, we don't mess with those"

Thanks for your time....

Gary,
I trying to adjust to my new schedule at the new job! It's not easy once you get in a sleep habit for 21 years. Now instead of being at the plant at 4:30am, I get in at 6:30am. For the most part, I still wake up at the same time!
