I know there has to be some deer hunters on this site other than myself so I figured I would post a pic of the buck I got last night and maybe others will do the same. I'm pretty proud of this one. Looks like an 8, but it is actually a 10. ------------- levin |

congratulations does that deer go 160 to 180 lbs? interesting to see the genetic differences in corn belt deer vs new england deer. i will try to post 2yrs ago buck 10 pt 185 from northeast mass . ------------- former skylark owner now a formula but I cant let this place go |

Can't wait till season opens down here in FL. Nov 3rd. I've been getting work in up at the camp in N. FL for the last few weeks. Unfortunately the same week I set my tripod feeder up, it got knocked down by a damn bear and I lost 4 bags worth of corn. Need to get a trail cam up, there have been sightings and he's apparently a 7-foot trophy black bear. Unfortunately I can't shoot him. :( Since have fixed the feeder, it's going to be tough for him to get to it now. Been seeing lots of does but no bucks yet. Levin whats an avg 3 to 4 yr old buck weight wise where you hunt? bret what about florida? are those florida hogs tasty? do you treat them like we do for pig roasts here? here i get the pig cooker to 180 to 210 slow roast for about 7.5 hrs for a hundred pound pig inject them with whatever we are experimenting with at the time. i always wanted to get down south and hunt those pigs and wondered if i could cook them the same as these domestic pigs. Pete, 3-4 yr. old bucks around us are all of 200 lbs. and more. I would say the one I shot last night was all of 200. He was big. Lots of big does around also that can push 140+. All we have around us are corn fields for them to graze in. I am pretty fortunate to have a great location to hunt. ------------- levin |

thanks i am in the same sort of new england gold mine here , we are at 12 to 15 per square mile , a big avg is 175 190 with a few tipping the 200 mark, northern maine breeds a large short in length deer that looks like your avg wrestler blocky and squat , they are tough hunting if i remember correctly 3 or so per sq mile and the bucks range quite far, here in mass, so maine and nh the available hunting areas open to hunting is very limited . I am fortunate to have 300 acres of apple orchard and a mix of swamp woodland to share with two others. i really miss the northern maine hunting though you cut a snow track and that deer will let you follow him all day climbing hummocks or little knolls and waiting til you get close then dropping off the other side . ------------- former skylark owner now a formula but I cant let this place go |

Pete, that sure sounds like a great area up there to live at, let alone hunt. Would love to see that area some time. I like the apple orchard and swamp woodlands you talk about. That sounds like deer heaven to me. We have corn and bean fields where I'm at, and have a river and creek running through the property with woods on both sides that widen and narrow at spots, creating perfect pinch points. The river and creeks are highways in between the wooded areas that are in the county. Things really get exciting during the rut. You never know what is going to show up. Tim, what I meant by "last night" was actually after work, evening. We cant shoot deer after sundown here in Illinois. Just thought I'd clear that up. ------------- levin |

They're real tasty! Definitely leaner and the best eating ones are under 100lbs. My favorite is making sausage out of them but last year I threw a big ham hock in the crock pot and it came out really good. I have a 100 acre lease plot this year on a still hunt land and its already got a lot of traffic in there. I'm very optimistic that this year is going to bring some real good things. But I really want some venison. I'll be hunting on my lease early morning and again in the evenings for bucks and then moving out to an adjacent 22,000 acre property during the day to run dogs with some friends after the piggies. Running dogs is fun too but with handheld GPS and collars on the dogs its almost like cheating. We make it interesting by going in after the catch dogs with no guns. I carry a 7" long USMC KA-BAR.
