We need to replace the steering cable in our 88. After some research I'm wondering how difficult it would be to swap out the entire system with rack and pinion or even just replace it with a new rotary. It all looks simple enough, but I've been mistaken before. Looking for advice/experience/comments.....I haven't found much info on such swaps/mods. Couple people claim success and like the upgrade (to the r&p), but no other info really. It just seems silly to spend $300 on a cable when an entire system is ~$150, other than a little extra work. Is there something I'm missing?

Don't know where you are getting your cable from seems about three times the actual cost. I got mine from skidim for around 75-100 bucks and it was breeze replacing.

79nautique, first....thanks for the replys. This is my first boat and while I'm mechanically inclined I don't pretend to know much about them. This is all new to me.

Is that a special order part that you know about? b/c they don't list a 17.5' on the site. I thought about using a 18' cable from skidim, but then I read this:

which is way more work than I care to do. With that much modification I would rather just replace it with the ridiculously expensive CC piece. Did that guy make a mountain out of a mole hill? Is the 18' a simple swap with a small loss in turn radius? Like I said, this is all new to me.

Bremson, I'll be interested to see the responses, but mechanically, I don't see why the length of cable makes any difference. Mechanically, you should be able to use a 100' cable, so long as it isn't kinked, and so long as the stearing wheel moves the cable back and forth the same distance as it does with a shorter cable. If the previous poster had issues, I would guess, it had something to do with a kink, or something was obstructing the new cable such that the throw (the amount of distance the cable moves) was reduced. This is a simple mechanical device. When you move the wheel, it slides a cable through a casing. The casing is rigidly attached at the steering column, and near the rudder. If you move the cable six inches at the column, then it will move six inches at the rudder, regardless of cable length.

BK is right. I replaced my steering cable on my 87 Supra several years ago with a ski dim order exactly like 79 mentioned. The new cable I got was actually nearly a foot shorter than the old one. I had room to shorten. There was no difference whatsoever in steering response. The only difference I think you might expect would be as BK brings up. BTW, the cable switch should be a cinch. Either way if you replace the whole helm and everything it won't be that hard.

THE CABLE THAT CC USES IN THE 82 TO 90 STYLE BOAT HAS EXTRA TRAVEL BUILT INTO THE CABLE SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE VERY SHARP TURNS. YOU CAN USE ANY CABLE BUT YOU WILL LOSE YOU TURNING RADIS.

Call Woody at Southeast CC. He kept me out of trouble and advised me of a couple of parts I needed for my '68 that no one else told me about. He can also give you step by step instructions. To be fair, if you appreciate his advise you should buy the cable from him. His salary has to come from somewhere - he is well worth it. Trust me on this one.

Please post what you do. I have an 87 nautique and looked at replacing the steering last year and I found out the same thing. Correct craft used cables in the half foot length and to get that from skidim it was like $350.00. I talked with VINCE there ( he is great ) and said I would have problems if I go to an even foot length cable. So I haven't done anything yet.

Thanks for the replies fellas. We've decided to "upgrade" and swap the entire helm to a r&p. I noticed just about all new Nautiques use this type of helm. I've gotten a reply from another SN2001 owner who has done this exact swap and was told its very easy and requires only slight modification to the dash. I can tolerate a little loss in radius.

87, We'll be tackling it sometime either the end of this month or early in March. I'll be sure to document the whole process with lots of pics.

Yes, I do still have it but we're going to have to keep the stock system.   Our attempt at going to a R&P turned sour after we found the cable could not be detached from the rack and we could not get the rudder end to route through under the floor (angle in the PVC was too great). We've conceeded defeat and have ordered the replacement cable from CC. We are disappointed, but I think its probably better since we'll likely be selling it at the end of the season. A new factory steering cable will be a good selling point.

However, you can still find the original around. Its called the Big-T helm from Teleflex and runs about $200 (less cable).

A rack system might be possible using the Uflex kit (looks like the cable is detachable), but its definately not possible with the Teleflex....at least w/o ripping up the floor. It would also be necessary to modify the guide (rudder end) for any aftermarket system/cable since the standard cables have shorter ends than the OE CC ones (extra turning radius). I'm pretty sure it is possible to do, but at this point it makes more sense to just replace whats there. Oh well, it was worth a shot.
