If 2 years in a barn because of a broken steering cable (from doing "donuts") qualifies then I just purchased a barn find 89 Ski Nautique. Had my eye on a 1985 Big Block SN, but when I was ready to buy, it was sold . My wife proclaimed in her infinite wisdom that "it was a sign from God that it wasn't meant to be and something better would come along" While searching craigslist I found an ad in Saginaw for a 1989 SN that needed a steering cable for $6,000 and the ad stated they were very flexible on the price . Called them up and went to see it, made an offer and then dragged it home.

There are no signs of wet foam or stringer rot.
1.) No cracks in the Gel along the chines
2.) No soft spots in the floor
3.) The lag bolts on the engine cradle gripped tight when I slightly loosened them and retightened.

It is pretty dirty and needs a good cleaning. Graphics are real nice. Hopefully a good buff and polish is all it needs.

Interior is in good shape, no rips or tears, just needs a good scrubbing and some minor repairs (other than the steering cable).

Awesome! And w/ a 1.23 to 1 to boot! There's a barn find on CL down here in ORL but it isn't in near the shape that yours is in and the guy is asking too much. Looks like you found a great one, congrats!

Nice find!!
Looks exactly like mine when I purchased mine...

Customised mine a little (to Pete's dismay )

A good clean and buff will bring out that red nicely

1.23 to 1 is that the trans ratio? as opposed to 1:1

Dude money! One of my favorite color combonations. I previously wasnt a huge fan of the 89 lacking the big 2001 and the flat windshield but the 89s have really been growing on me. Last summer a beautiful black on white 89 surfaced on my lake and I was in love.

665 hours on it. I will post pictures of the engine later today. I didn't try to start it because it is winterized. Plan on squirting some oil in the cylinders, turning it over, doing a compression check and then tune it up and change the fluids before attempting to fire it up for the first time (when it gets warmer out- Michigan is cold in March.

Wesl - That is a sister to my boat - congratulations, you got a great deal on a great boat.

In addition to the suggestions above, check the shaft alignment before the the summer.

Yes sir! '89 was the first year for this in the Ski Nautique and the only year for the 2001 hull.

Congratulations. I love the 89's! My 89 is in the first stages of rehab right now. The other nice thing about the 1.23 transmission is that it spins the prop right hand while the motor spins left, which simplifies engine work and parts.

I'm Confused, in reading the tags on the engine in my 1989 2001 with a 1:23:1 trans, I thought that the R's were telling me that the engine was right rotation and the prop was right rotation.

Wes,

Nice job! We have twin boats. I wish that would have been listed last spring. I paid $7500 for mine and had to drive 10 hours to get it(still a good deal though). Looks like it will clean up nice. If you ever bring it "Up North" to TC there could be a photo opportunity. Congrats on a great find!

Great find looks in to be in very good condition just in need of a big clean and polish. Is it Fire Red or Cranberry??

The 89's have lots of advantages over the previous years:-

....Better resin
....Power plus 1.23 trans (improved fuel economy and pulling power)
....Single exhaust with septic tank muffler. Although some consider this a disadvantage. If you are in the boat for long periods of time you will soon appreciate it.
....Engine sits nice and low into bilge with less angle.
....Normal automotive engine rotation.

WATER IN THE FOAM?? It may very well have (like all of them), I hope not, but I did it once and I probably could do it again (should have offered less )

The alarm is in the dash, just pushed in a little, most likely from someone hitting it because it was going off all of the time.

I will be in Traverse City on June 15th for a wedding, didn't plan on bringing the boat, but maybe I should. Definitely have the boat at Otsego Lake the week of July 4th. I was going to drive 12 hours to get the BB Ski Nautique, sucks to drive that much but it is worth it for the right boat.

Here are a couple of engine photos

Has anyone experienced this, the engine cover wasn't fully attached to the hinges and the pins were not installed. It looks like the water pump pulley sawed through the engine cover and through the vinyl. I assume this "hole" isn't a factory clearance hole for the pulley?

LOL, ouch! That sucks but should be an easy fix. Wonder why they didn't have it in the hinges. Would have been easy for a passenger to inadvertently push the box back. That's always a favorite footrest for me when I'm riding in other people's boats.

My '89 has the exact hole ground into the cover as yours.

Engine looks dead on yours with exception to the accel coil, and I have an orange water separator at the port front bilge.

I removed the the muffler, not much louder really. Easier to work on.

I would add a grounding block to the gauges.
I chased a temp proplem that was non existent due to low reading gauges.

Nice boat. 89's are special.

Was the hole there when you bought the boat or did it happen while you owned it? I am just guessing at the cause, seems likely.

I wonder if it made any noise when the pulley was sawing through??

You can repair that motor box with some epoxy & cloth. For a temp repair, I would clip off some red vinyl from the underside of a seat & glue it in place. Eventually, you are going to need a skin though.

Could that hole be caused because the aftermarket high fly that was slipped over the pylon wouldn't allow the cover to close? Pull the hinge pins and slide the engine cover back to close each time the extension was used over the pylon.

The Fly High pylon extension is in the boat was pushing on the cover and rubbing through the vinyl.

Chris,
you have a pylon extension in your diary photo, did you ever experience anything like this? By the way, when I was looking at this boat I was drooling over your boat and hoping I will be able to make this one look like yours and Scotts.

It's from the box hoping over the stops when someone's feet are pushing against it. Not the pylon extension. I'm just a hobbyist though.

Skierox purchased a brand new 1989 Ski Nautique, sold it in 1993. We have seen the hole damage many times. Most likely from pushing a foot, or two against the engine cover. For sure, not factory, no hole in the engine cover from Correct Craft! I have helped repair one in a 1989. This was also the first year for that engine box design. Old style would not fit the new muffler.

Yes, there is some evidence of this - but it did not happen on my watch! Definitely from pushing, not the pylon.

Thanks for the compliments. These boats have a timeless look to them.

I have the same hole in my 89'. I just had my interior done and the guy reinforced the motor box a ton and patched the hole. I went down to the lake yesterday and found out that the motor box is rubbing on the front so looks like ill have to get that taken care of this evening.

Must not be much clearance on those 89s

-------------

Posted By: wwchevy

Actually it is good news that it isnt the extended pylon, I've never used one but I am planning on to get into wakeboarding (that should be good @ 50 years old). I am thinking about maybe moving the engine cover stops forward a little to give additional clearance to the pulley and and making the stops slightly taller to prevent the cover hopping over them. I can't imagine that I can stop bikini clad hotties from putting their feet on the cover- or that I would even want to

My 90 is susceptible to the box rubbing on the pulleys as well... not a lot of clearance. I would be hesitant to move the box forward, as you'll decrease clearance between the pylon and box, which is a negative when it comes to using a barefoot boom. You may not have the option to do so anyways- I know my rear panel that holds the hinge tie downs is all the way forward, butted against the transmission.

Like everyone else confirmed, the Fly High has nothing to do with that wear... its all from people putting their feet up against the motorbox. Thats a no-no.

-------------

Posted By: JoeinNY
Date Posted: March-07-2013 at 12:31pm
My 83 also has a tendency to rub a hole through the box.. showed up after I went from a 1:1 to a 1:23 to 1 - so it doesnt surprise me to here that a few other 89's had the problem.. even with a new motor box design you cant move the box any farther forward than the pylon.

If my memory is correct. The 71 Nautique I owned, had a slot in front of the motor cover, to clear the pylon as you closed it.
I guess that way they could mount the motor cover a little farther foward to clear the pulley.

The boat looks great. Enjoy all the hours you put into doing all that work.

I do need to correct you about an alignment needed due to vibration. Typically a misaligned shaft/strut/engine will NOT cause vibration since the shaft is in a bind. What will cause vibration is a bad prop, a loose prop and or a bent prop shaft. Have you check any of these items?

Wait, I thought a cutlass bearing (bad) could also cause a vibration in the final portion of the drive train, is that wrong?

Thanks Jack,
Last year at this time I was just starting a restring on the 71 Mustang and I missed most of the boating season. This year I got smart and sold my 1985 2001 that needed stringers and bought this boat. I thought I would get a boat that needed minimal work so I could actually use it instead of working on it.

Pete,
Your input is always welcome and appreciated. It isn't much of a vibration, but I think I will check the entire running gear. Start with checking shaft runout, check or replace cutless bearing, evaluate the prop and do an alignment. Now that the boat is running good I can concentrate on perfecting it.

Yup, I forgot that one. Thanks for the reminder! A bad cutlass with good alignment will vibrate due to the shaft slop in the cutlass.

Whew, cause that was the last thing to check/fix on the 63 - still working through that one... Hoping it solves the issue.

Just taking a quick look, there is a ding in the prop, not sure if this could cause it or not. I don't feel any slop in the cutless, but I was young (and high) in the 70's

Wes,

That ding in your prop is sure enough to cause the vibration...
Two solutions:
1. Have it fixed
2. Replace it with an ACME CNC prop (ACME 1442 and ACME 470 are good examples)

I replaced my original prop with an ACME 1442 and haven't regretted spending that money, not for a millisecond...

Kristof,
Thanks, I will definitely fix that prop and look at getting an Acme CNC-can't have enough props.
