So is this extra incentive not to post pictures and videos of you doing blow, human trafficking, and other illegal activities on the internet?

I never understood all the privacy concerns with social sites. It's a social site where you post stuff about your life. You voluntarily agreed to make this stuff public or at least you elected not to read/understand what you were agreeing to in the first place. If you want to get technical, posting pictures of your boat on this site could be used to determine the location of your boat and people openly discuss their boating practices like where they go and how often which could then be used to determine if it's a good candidate to be stolen or have your car broken into.

Smart phones often tag the pic taken on them with GPS coordinates.

Yikes.

That's why its good to have pics of your boat taken EVERYWHERE. That way they won't know if it's FL, GA, NC, CT, TN, WI etc. Hard to track down a moving target.

Doesn't really matter anyway. You Tag your trailer so Big Brother knows where it is anyway. Use a Credit card to do anything they know where you are. I loved the Jason Bourne movies but it's scary if you think about as if they REALLY want to find you they CAN! Cell phones are great but with everyone of them utilizing the phones camera capabilities, hardly ANYTHING is private anymore. The Pop Parazzi is EVERYWHERE!

The IRS might use it.

Again, this is meant as a convenience feature so you can take a nice sunset picture at the Grand Canyon or something and you don't actually have to tell all of your friends where you took it. GPS is on during a call so it's easier to track you in the event of an emergency. If you aren't doing anything illegal, all of this stuff can be your friend and make life easier.

Default settings vary by app, phone, program, etc. based on what the developer thought the majority of people want. "Settings" are for everyone and not just for power users and geeks.

I think the gps location could also be buried in the .exif data on some phones, without any user control by default.
