So I was making some calls about boat regestration and they said it would cost about $37.00 to regester and $445.00 in state tax for the sale.

I bought it in Iowa and it was a private sale. Does this sound right that I have to pay tax for a private sale to get the boat regestered?

There is a bill of sale and the Sale Price is printed on the back of the title.

Yes you have to pay sales tax to the state you are registering the boat in and you have to pay it within 30 days or they zap you interest .

If you want a title.... it's a boat....running or not! Don't title it if your gonna part it out....but if you are going to restore...pay the tax.

Just went and paid it. That $400 could have gone to a few more worthy expenditures like parts, skis, or beer.

Oh well I am a proud taxpaying American.

In NY, if you want to own a boat and have it registered, you pay 8% sales tax on the boat and the trailer stated values on the bill of sale and then an additional ~ $100 for the first time registration. But on the bright side, it is good for 3 years. Someone has to keep the gov'ment going!!

I don't know how it is in other states, but in Ky. you pay sales tax when you purchase a boat and property taxes each year after that when you get that years registration sticker.

In Iowa, the county that you buy your boat in gets to keep the sales tax.

I bought from a different county -- when I went to courthouse to pay the piper, the lady went over this 3 times, clearly wanting me to lie so our county would get the money. Didn't bite . . .

Been a while, but as I recall, no sales tax on used boats here in Georgia since they are registered with the Department of Natural Resources, not the DMV.

Trailers are, however, registered with the state so Ad Valorem (Property) taxes are assessed annually. I hadda look it up...2012 taxes on my Southwind trailer were $3.41 and my Century trailer were $2.39 for a grand total 2012 property tax bill of Five Dollars and Eighty Cents.
