I would not run a lower octane than recommended.
I burn my gas fast so no treatment.

I drive 50 miles roundtrip to buy gasoline with no ethanol, so that is only 91 octane. I do use stabil, if I end up with some ethanol blended fuel, then I use the blue stabil (marine), it also goes in my snowmobiles, if they happen to get any ethanol blended fuel. In general though I avoid the ethanol blend like the plague...

89 at a minimum. I'm lucky enough to have an ethanol free gas station right down the road. I run mid grade in the early months and then premium once the temp breaks 80(I run at barefoot speeds 90% of the time so I want to ward off any pinging with the heat, otherwise no benefit from higher than recommended octanes). Blue Stabil is what I'd rec., but like glass pointed out, unless you let gas sit in the tank you prob don't need an additive. From what I've been told enthanol blends do most of their damage when they're allowed to sit.
