For a boat that's been out of the water for quite a few years in storage, does the packing need to be re-hydrated? It won't do any harm to try it as is, will probably leak some. I would just replace the packing. It's about a $10 project. Gore-Tex is the way to go these days. You should also replace the RWP impeller if it has been sitting that long. Thanks for the reply. I guess care is the rule here and open the cover and watch. Everything else has been replaced: oil, oil filter, FCC filter, gas, and impeller. I sure hope you used an oil with ZDDP to protect you flat tappet engine. What did you put in it?
