For a boat that's been out of the water for quite a few years in storage, does the packing need to be re-hydrated? Or, should the boat sit in the water for an amount of time before taking off and driving it when it launches back into the water?

It won't do any harm to try it as is, will probably leak some. I would just replace the packing. It's about a $10 project.

Gore-Tex is the way to go these days.

You should also replace the RWP impeller if it has been sitting that long. I would also drain the old gas & replace oil, oil filter, fuel filter.

Thanks for the reply. I guess care is the rule here and open the cover and watch.   Everything else has been replaced: oil, oil filter, FCC filter, gas, and impeller.

Somebody stole my trailer plate.

I sure hope you used an oil with ZDDP to protect you flat tappet engine. What did you put in it? I also am curious on the filter brand.
