I'm hoping there is a link to a thread for this somewhere. (my computer is having a hard time with the search right now)
I am restoring a 91 BF (V-drive) and want to know how much play is normal. I seem to be able to move the rudder up and down about 1/4" maybe a lil more... Can it be snugged down? do I need to add a brass washer between the top nut and arm? There is very very little play otherwise. And obviously I know to use the safety wire.
The cable seems to slide ok, but I have several inches of 'play' either way in the steering wheel before the cable engages. Do I just pull the back off the underside of the steering mech. to adjust of fix? I am a little paranoid about working on steering, and the ramifications if I don't do something correctly.... Thanks for any help!

Mike,
Some play in the helm to rudder is normal but it sounds like your's is too much. Both the cable and helm box wear. A new cable may fix some of it. Open up the box too and check for wear. The shaft bushings may need replacing.

The up and down on the rudder is easy. Put that brass washer between the packing gland and the tiller arm but first attend to the packing. Tighten it up or repack since this will determine the amount of washers you need.

Pete, what the heck is a rudder shaft bushing? Never seen a CC with replaceable rudder bushings.

McMaster has the appropriate sized brass washers, though they're pretty spendy!

The Helm has bushings in it that can get worn. These aren't available as a service part so if the play is coming from there, a new helm is in order.    There also is a splined connection (at least on mine) between steering wheel & helm. That can also have play in it too.

But 1st I would check that the cable clamp just before the rudder is not loose.

Tim,
I don't feel you were following my line of thought.

Thank you for the advice gentlemen... I should add that when I water tested it, I was getting a very slow trickle of water in through the top of the rudder nut (thats where it appeared to be coming). I have slightly tightened up the large nut but have not had it back in the water. I still seem to have the up and down play of 1/4" or better. Maybe a brass washer will alleviate that.. I wonder if Ace hardware has em.. The rudder port I assume has to be stuffed just like the shaft box... Is it 1/4" wax rope?
Thanks again!

Yes, the rudder gland uses packing material just like prop shaft. Not sure of the size, 3/16 & 1/4 were both used.   Maybe someone else knows for sure.

Chris is correct that the bushings may not be a replaceable item from Teleflex but, I've never seen any bushing that can't be replaced. McMaster is a good source for bushings.
