I wanted to replace the stuffing box packing on my recently purcahsed 2001 Air Nautique.
It's a V-Drive (which I have never replaced one on) -- but have done my previous DD boat.
The interesting issue I am facing is that this one has, what looks to be a balance weight or something right above the shaft -- making it so I can't really get to the bolt after it's unscrewed.
The picture shows what I'm talking about -- but makes it so that the outer bolt can't really slide up the shaft very much.
Is this a counter-weight of some sort that I can just remove/slide and put back? Does it need to be put back in the exact spot and/or do I just need to try to work around it....somehow?
Thanks, Ben

That's the safety collar. It's there so if the shaft breaks, it won't go out the aft end into your rudder. It's nothing more than a set screw shaft collar. Loosen it and slide it forward.
What "bolt" are you trying to get to?

Sorry -- meant to say that I didn't have enough space to get the packing nut (not bolt).
What you describe makes perfect sense -- thanks for the help!! again :D

Ben, I forgot to ask why are you repacking? I've had packing last for over 20 years. If you feel you have excessive dripping, try tightening the gland first. Don't forget the packing is water lubricated and it does need to drip some.
