Got a bit sidetracked on my project by life and summer activities. Between camps, playing too many summer sports, drag boat races, mowing grass and the heat I haven't had much time to work on getting the motor fired. Finnaly ran tonight and and the alternator belt was screaming so I shut it down and removed it (on the trailer at the ramp). Didn't have my meter to check for output, it spins fine, nice and freely with no belt. I'm wondering if it's possibly too tight or to loose, or an internal problem?   Cheap Chinese alternator, it wasn't unusual for it to squeal on the first start up for a second in the past, once it stopped the voltage came up, I was in the back with the remote starter and the timing light so I didn't check for the voltage rise. The only difference is a new toothed belt, the smooth PCM belt was starting to split.

I think you need to isolate that sound. Could be as simple as a little belt dressing. Or could be a bearing in the alternator. Both of which are easy fixes. Put your old belt on and run it. If the sound goes away, you have half your answer. If it doesn't, maybe it's not the alternator a t all. Good luck.

+1 on trying the old belt. I would think that a toothed belt might not get enough traction on a pulley designed for a smooth belt.

I'll have to go get another belt, the other is long gone.   Sounds like general consensus is its a belt issue which was the real question, needs to 15 or 20 min Saturday for the fireworks show and I was debating about wheather or not to just order another one which would be here Friday if I ordered today. I was really more concerned about the noisy valves at the time. Hopefully I'll have a chance to get the valves adjusted and give it another shot tonight.

My boat has new old (been sitting a few years)PCM belts on it. The alt belt sounds like the bearing went out, till I put dressing on it, can't even hear the engine running now!

Problem solved I think. When I was putting things back together the pulleys didn't all align due to the paint so I had to spend a little extra time making sure everything lined up. After a couple of try's I ended up moving the pulley on the alternator out by adding a washer and moving the lock ring to the back. The noise was the pully slipping on the shaft. I guess I'll have to shim the bracket out and put the pulley back to its original location on the alternator. Not sure it has ever lined up the way it should, it goes through 2 belts before the the raw water pump needs one.
