My new to me 2000 SN 196 is taking on water somewhere. If I leave the bilge pump running it runs every 10 minutes or so, if I don't use it the water is up to the starter in a few days . I cleaned the bilge pretty well but It seems to be gathering an light oily film from somewhere. It runs great and the water doesn't appear from the shaft dripping .I'm thinking it may be an exhaust leak and maybe where the oil film is coming from. Thanks for any help on this.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the oil film at this point. That could be from anything that has coated the bilge over the years. I take it that your boat sits in the water full time?
Leaks can be from the prop shaft packing, the rudder packing, the exhaust or about any thru hull fitting.
Most common are the prop shaft and rudder. It mightbe a little difficult to track it down buut with a little patience, you'll find it.

Take the rear floor out, the engine cover and any other floor access panels so you have easy access to the whole bilge. Get it on the trailer and drain it completely. Then back it in the water again and you should be able to see pretty quickly where it's leaking at. For the pump to run every ten minutes, that's a pretty good leak.

Sounds like you also need a functioning float switch on your bilge pump.

My leak was from a hole in my muffler.

Those bilge pumps are fully automatic. They cycle every so often regardless of the water level. If they sense no load they shut off or keep running when resistance is present.
Do what they said with the motor box and floor out and take a good hard look everywhere you can see. Key points of intrusion will be shaft/rudder/exhaust hoses/muffler. Very unlikely that the strut or rudder port mount is leaking unless the boat has had glass work done in the past.
I'm going to assume it isn't anything that sits higher than the water line because it fills up when it isn't running.
