My local lumber yard can not get DF in 2x8 dimensions long enough. He did say he could get LVL but suggested Southern Yellow Pine. It is readily available in high grades and he thinks it would be a reasonable substitute as it will be covered in CPES then epoxy/ fiberglassed in place. Any thoughts? I am willing to drive a reasonable distance for DF trying to locate something close to NE Florida along I95.

Go with the LVL. There's a great thread on using it from one of our members who used it. SYP!! Did even talk about the moisture content? I suggest getting it down below 8%. The LVL will be there,
BTW, don't forget the CPES!

LVL it is!! Moisture was at 14% in the yard according to him . It was outside in a covered(carport)area . Did not think it was a wise choice, but never hurts to ask. Thanks for the input, Rex

REX, 14% is on the way high side for stringers and even beyond normal construction standards. I believe with construction, it should be below 12%. Is this guy trying to sell you old stuff he has in the yard? Is it at least wrapped? You do not want the LVL to have the moisture seal. It'd s wax and will inhibit the epoxy penetration.

I think I have located a source for Douglas Fir just south of me in Daytona. I will give them a call on Monday. So far the closest supplier to me is 6 hours away in Atlanta. I would much prefer a soild piece of lumber over a laminated beam in the marine setting. The local non-big-box lumber yard I went to really did not want to sell a few pieces of material. Everything basically out in the weather except plywood and drywall inside. They mostly deal with contractors. The local guy who I trust does not have access to any dimensional lumber. He mostly does fine finish wood work. He suggested the supplier in Daytona. I am not sure they will do a retail sale.
Maybe should go back to flying!!!

don't get discouraged! Home Depot and Lowes can both order you the LVL in the correct size and without the waxy moisture barrier. you may have to talk to the person at the pro desk though. they are usually a bit more knowledgeable about ordering things than the average floor staff.

Pete What would be wrong with clear southern yellow pine. If I remember correctly that was the perferred wood for porch floors in the south for it's ability to withstand the foot traffic and moisture without warping cupping or rotting.

Interesting table data shows yellow pine to be stronger than DF. I wonder if DF is more rot resistant.

Okay, found DF $250/ stick! so..............I ordered the LVL beam at $51 a stick. Thanks for all the help and advice.
Florida Southern guy could not stop laughing when I told my local yard suggested clear Yellow Pine. He said it would rot and/or twist with even the smallest amount of water intrusion. He said it would his last choice.

Ordered the LVL from Allied Building Products out of Daytona. Sean was extremely helpful. He tried to get DF also but said the trucking cost is why it was so expensive. They only needed one day lead and cut to by the foot. Florida Southern had Mahogony $$$$$$

Rex, I'm glad you found a solution. The LVL is not a bad option. Just remember it's thicker than a normal 2x and you will need to s thorough CPES treatment.

Not sure that guy knew what he was talking about, he must have been thinking white pine. http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/fpltn/fpltn-119-1952.pdf" rel="nofollow - http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/fpltn/fpltn-119-1952.pdf
