Guys I can't seem to get my boat to cool down the way It think it should. I am running a 160 degree thermostat in it. It hardly ever goes down to 160. I'm always running 170 -180. It's driving me nuts!! I checked all hose connections to see if I was sucking air. They all seem tight. I checked my strainer and its good. I do see some air bubbles in it though. Should there be? I have a tee before the strainer that I'm going to remove To see if that is a problem. The tee is a fresh water tee with a check ball in it to Run off the hose. Maybe it's sucking there. its drivin me crazy!!! Any thoughts? I also thought the thermostat was maybe not opening all the way but I don't know. Your thoughts? Thanks so much. Tony.

Take the check valve out of play. They will sometimes stick. Happened to my BFN. I don't think you should have bubbles in your strainer. Sounds like you have an air leak somewhere. Could be the gasket on the strainer bucket also.

This time of year when the water temps are close to 90 that's not unusual, I see similar temps. I just keep a litter sharper eye on the guage, make sure that it has a good power and ground if those aren't right mine reads a little hot. I worry more when it won't cool just after a restart, or when I bump up the RPM's on the way back to the skier. I'm really more intrested in that it's behaving normal than the actual temp.

I pulled the strainer screen on the way back on the river tonight to just see what it would do and it ran 170 all the way back to the boat ramp. It drops when I slow down and take off again. Seems normal but weird. Then it goes from 160 to 170. When I was headed up river early in the day the temp spiked and safety killed the engine. I never experienced that before. Took the boat near shore and checked all places I could. Removed the strainer screen and let it sit for 20 min. Then on the way back it read 170 all the way.ill try again tomorrow. Thanks.

Tony I would use the recommended 143 degree thermostat. The 160 is meant more for the EFI engines. It will then run around the 160 mark most of the time.

Lewy is correct, carbed engines should be running a 143 stat. 160 stat is for EFI. When was the last time you checked your impeller?

The impeller is where I started. It's in really good shape. My rwp is dripping so I thought I would take it apart and give it a look. I am going to rebuild it this fall. I replaced the gasket and thought it would stop the drip but no. The impeller was in great shape. I thought I would like the 160 stat but I guess it's not for my boat. I'm going to take the tee off in the morning and bypass it. I'm going to order a 143 degree stat. They say the boat performs better and a little higher temp/ more efficient but at 170 it seems hot to me. Thanks again. Tone.

You're getting bubbles in the strainer which indicates a gasket leak. You have a drip on the RWP which could also be letting air into the system (if it isn't the impeller seal, it has to be the shaft seal). Both of which can impede the water flow efficiency through the engine. Then, on top of that, the wrong thermostat is in there. You're extremely lucky that it's running at 180 degrees.
Fix that stuff and you should be fine.

I don't think I have seen this stated explicitly before. Why is that?
I have a 143 on the Tique (carbed 350) and a 160 on the SN (carbed 351). Both seem to perform fine. I will admit the SN seems to get a lot warmer between runs with the motor off, but as soon as I restart, it comes down quickly, and frequently dips below the 160 mark.
Bones, I had similar problems before the transmission rebuild/shaft replacement on the SN, but when I replaced the transmission oil cooler, I went through the cooling system from the pickup to the pump/impeller making sure all the connections were tight and gaskets in place, and problem solved.
If you have air bubbles in your strainer, you might check to see that the O-ring is still there. They are easy to drop without noticing; thankfully, they usually fall into the bilge.

Tony - Weren't you having tranny fluid disappear? Maybe these 2 problems have a common cause.

RRR, yes I have a lot of fun things going on right now. I definitely have some kind of tranny leak. I need to pull it. I thought the temp thing was an easy fix. When I ordered the 160 stat I was originally going for the 143 but they talked me out of it. Off to the river today after the tee pulled and I'll open up the oil cooler and inspect. Thanks.

Found my tee like this. The gasket was torn. removed it along with the strainer. I'm going to run it straight and see where she temps.

Tony, who talked you out of it, and why would they recommend running something other than the spec? The raw water cooling system is very basic and it's not like some modern improvement has come available (other than more reliable impeller materials, I suppose). Using a 160 degF thermostat intead of the 143 degF spec just sounds like a bad idea from the start.

I know. I should just listen to guys on here. I don't want to knock SkiDim. They have been great with all my needs. My motor is a repowered 351. I think they saw it as a better way to go so I said ok. they said 160 was not really that warm I thought "ok. That will be fine" I'm going back to a 143. I had a issue when I bought the boat in the spring. The stat would not close and therefore the engine would not come up to temp. To move things along the previous owner put in a 170 stat. I changed it out to a 160 with the advice from SkiDim knowing you guys said 143. Yep still learning. Baby steps. tony.

The 143F Thermostat does not let the motor run at 143F it will run at around 160F. So your 160F Thermostat running at 170-180F seems about right.

Well maybe I have a 143 in the SN after all (I haven't opened it up to take a look), it will run below 160...

I run a 160, the only times it runs at much different temps than others report is during the winter and sometimes in August when our water is in the mid 90's. Not sure a 143 wouldn't run around the same temps in August, I've never used one on a carbed motor in water that warm.

I run a 160 in mine as well. I've been running it for 3 years in the TX heat. And like Don says, our WATER temps, not air temps are in the mid 90's. I typically see the boat running around 175 degrees. It holds fairly constant within a few degrees.
The reason they recommended a higher temp t-stat is because there is some argument for better atomization of fuel at a slightly higher temp. The 351 likes a minimum of about 155 degrees for proper atomization of the fuel. Some places have water temps that make that a difficult temperature to realize. So as an all around, the 160 is a better option if you're selling t-stats to the masses. It also provides warmer water for a shower if you have one.
Well...that's the way it was presented to me anyway. Regardless, I run a 160 t-stat. Engine is 175 degrees in warm water all day everyday. We barefoot incessantly which means we see WOT quite often. 175 degrees is nothing to worry about. Most cars on the street are running much warmer.

Dex Merc is the right stuff. If you have a leak, it leaks red (ask me how I know )

Guys, put in the 143 degree stat and all was good. Temped at 160 all night. Felt good seeing stay put. I removed the tee and the strainer and ran straight off the pick up. Now I want to put back in the strainer. I have one question. On the PVC fittings that connect to the strainer body.... I just used white plumbers thread tape on the threads. Is this ok to use or should I use another kind of thread seal? Tony.

That's it, I haven't seen anything else for threaded PVC. Just for good measure, make sure there isn't anything stuck in the cooler when you put the strainer back on. Doesn't take too many leaves to clog it up. Out of curiosity, has your water temp dropped any? Here the shorter days will drop the temp even though the highs and lows are about the same as they are in August.

It's been really hot here the last few weeks. Water temp is pretty warm. I think it's headed down soon. Today it was 97 out and Friday is supposed to be in the 70's. I don't want it to cool down but I work in a hot fab shop and am looking forward to cooler temps. Tony.

Even if the water temp was 80, the delta T is still wide. You should have plenty of water flowing to cool the engine. I would suggest looking at other issues. Have you done a bucket yest on how much water your are actually pumping?

Pete, all is good. No problems here any more. Had her out today and she ran like a champ. Temping right where it should. I think I was sucking air somewhere.either the flush tee or the strainer. I'm going through everything before I put them back on. I'm just running off the pickup right now. Thanks though. Tony.
