Your normal operating temp should be at 160, and I believe a 140 thermo will get you there. Others will chime in soon

Thanks, so another Q the other weekend my temp. Gauge was pegged all the way past 220 let the boat sit awhile and temp didnt go down and the.gauge didnt return to the right when turn off either but now seems ok like at 180, could there be a lose connection somewhere that is giving me the false reading?

Yikes 220 is hot, not good. An impeller inspection would be first. It's going to take several hours to air cool, the gauge is fine besides a loose connection would read low.

poor grounds are normal in the dash, I suffer from hot reading when I turn the nav lights, gauge normal range reads 160, once I hit the light bam it moves to 200... I have to addres this problem asap...
so to your answer normal t is 160, it will rise some if you turn off the engine and restart a few minutes after... Correct T stat for the carbed engine is the 143º...check impeller and make sure all the hose are tight to prevent them from sucking air...
