I'm looking for an Edelbrock 1409 (600cfm marine) carb. This is for a Chrysler in our Mustang, which still has the original Carter AFB. Willing to trade a used or rebuilt Holley marine 4160... I have both 450cfm and 600cfm flavors on the shelf. TRBenj@gmail.com |

| FYI, if your PCV valve connects to the base of the carb, you have to drill the carb and install a nipple. For some reason the automotive carbs come with the nipple, but the marine carbs do not. |

GAH!!!!!!!!!!! I bought a 1409 for my 273, i returned it as i loved the carter carb I had. I rebuilt it in 3 hrs and the engine purs like a kitten. Rebuild your carb tim, don't waste your money. REBUILD FTW. Best price i could find if you really want an edelbrock was this... http://www.nationalcarburetors.com/marine/fourbarreledelbrock.aspx $270. Also i swear a 1409 needs to modifications before it can go on a 273, it's different then a 318. I would had to have reworked the choke and the throttle placement. IDK just not worth it to me. Not interested in a National rebuilt/reman unit... looking for new/used. We have a 318 coming to us without a carb, so we're one Carter/Eddy short on our Chryslers. Figured we might as well get a marine compliant unit, hence the search for a 1409. Bruce, my impression is that the Carter AFB on our 273 shown above is probably not a true "marine" carb, as that seems to predate the added safety features. We havent touched the plumbing and it appears to be original (read: neglected). Are you saying that something may be plumbed improperly? I think its just an elbow (not a PCV valve) and offhand, I cant remember where it attaches. I'll check it out. |

This is a non original set up, but if your current set up uses a pcv valve or some type of draft tube from the valve cover or intake that connects to a vacuum on the base of the carb, you'll have to drill one and install a nipple like we did. The auto Edelbrocks come with it. The marine carbs don't. Some AFBs came with it.

Well tim if you have the patience I have an extra 318 carb, but it's in WI. I can get the mom or sis to grab it in a few weeks. It's a carter, but if you want a cheap one in the mean time let me know...i'd sell you it for 40-50? idk what's fair. Bruce, now Im following you. I thought your comment was in reference to my set up above- now I see youre talking about the Eddy. Gotcha! Peter, send me those pictures over... if nothing else, it may be good to have a practice carb if/when we rebuild our existing. Anyone know what CFM size the Carters were on these? The 1409 is the smallest Eddy sold these days and its a 600cfm. Not sure if the 273 used something smaller or different than the 318. |

I bet the 273 Afb was a 500cfm. They still made 500cfm Carters up until Edelbrock took over the production in?????? We had a performance afb on the 440 car when we sold it. Probably left a lot on the table ha. ------------- |

Here's the info i can give you. My Carter on my 273 was 3980s while the one on my 318 is a 96xxs......what i sent you pictures of and looks just like a edel 1409. They were totally different in setup. Part of the difference was what Riley mentioned on the vacuum at the base of the carb. Internet search: 3980 Mopar 65/66 M273-B 600 so my 273 has a 600cfm carb on it.
