Hi all.

My dad came down to the coast and we tinkered on the boat today. I wanted to be sure of my oil pressure since changing the dizzy and he brought along a mechanical oil gauge.
We hooked everything up, and fired her up for a bit.
I have a very poor carb on it, and the new one is not in yet, so we had a hard time getting it down to a low idle. Best we could do is what sounded like 1500rpm or so. (tach is busted too)
At all ranges of rpm I have 60 psi on the oil gauge. I can't figure out why....all I have done is swap dizzys and change the oil to some cheap 5w30. (doing a cheap oil fill to flush out the motor before putting in the vr1)

The timing is off too. Even with a bent needle, I can't get the timing anywhere near 10 deg. Its set now about 25 and runs fine, but that is of course at fast idle....
I read a post about a guy with his boat idling great at 30 deg advanced. But at least he could dial his back, I cannot.
Any thoughts as too why my motor craves more advance?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
I am not going to mess with it further for a couple weeks when I can get the new carb on it and replace the tach. Then I can get it to idle properly and check things again.

60 PSI is what I get above idle, so that is normal.

When you say you cannot get timing below 25 deg, do you mean the engine stops, or that you cannot rotate the dizzy?

you'll get a significant amount of advance when the idle is high like that.   get the carb issue straightened out, and put a timing light with an electronic tach and advance guage on it. you'll be able to check your dwell at the same time.   I don't think your timing is all that far out I think you are supposed to set it at about 600RPM.

Thanks Chris. I am going to pick up a new mechanical gauge and mount a y under the hood to have one to go along with the electrical one.

As for the timing. I put the dizzy in where I marked it, and it fired right up. When we put a timing light on it so see where it was it was over 30 deg advanced. While my my dad fiddles with the carb linkage to try and get the rmps down to a low idle, I check the timing, and as I retard it to around 20 or so, it stalls out. Now, since the carb is also an issue, its hard to see where the problem really lies.
As it sits now, the engine is timed at around 25 deg and seems to run fine, but if I try to retard it more I have trouble.
